The Navy has been a part of Brookfield since the early 1800s. The first Naval Station in Illinois was established at the mouth of the Chicago River, and then moved to what is now the city of Brookfield in 1872. The navy station operated until 1924 when it was closed due to budgetary reasons. In 1951, the navy station reopened as Naval Station Ashland under the command of Commander, United States Fleet Forces Europe. In 1957-1959, U.S. Naval Station Rockford was opened on land leased from Northwestern University which had been used for agricultural purposes before being turned into a naval station. In 1961-1965, Commander, United States Fleet Forces Atlantic Command relocated from Norfolk VA to Rockford IL and renamed it Naval Station Peoria IL; this was followed by Commander, United States Fleet Forces Pacific Command located at San Diego CA in 1969 and Commander United States Fleet Forces Europe (CUE) stationed at Portsmouth NH in 1971. USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 78) became operational along with USS John F Kennedy (CVN 66) on 9/24/1973 as part of CUE's NATO Exercise - allies responded with warships from 10 different countries including France, Norway, Belgium and Denmark; these exercises were also conducted off Maryland coast during 1973 summer Olympics period). On 2/1/1975 President Gerald Ford honored Admiral Hyman Rickover with Medal of Honor for his role in developing nuclear weapons technology during World War II while aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 73). The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library & Museum features artifacts related to American naval history which are on display for visitors throughout their visit including an exhibit about Admiral Rickover's life called "A Hero's Journey" . On 12/2/1976 Vice Admiral Elmo Zumwalt assumed command of U.S. 5th Fleet based at Yokosuka Japan after Commodore Harry S Truman relieved Admiral Chester Nimitz Jr., commander Fifth fleet on that date following KOREAN WAR - Zumwalt served until he transferred to Fifth Fleet Headquarters Rear Adm John H Wohlgemuth who took over July 1st 1977 becoming Deputy Chief of Staff First Class - responsible for all aspects Relgation Affairs within 5thFleet...Zumwalt left active service effective 3rd day following his retirement age set by Defense Dept.......After leaving active duty Zumwalt joined private industry where he spent 20 years as CEO North American Aviation Inc.........ViceAdmiral Tom Moore assumed command 17th Flotilla headquartered outof Naples Italy when RearAdm John A Cooke retired effective 3rd day following his retirement age set by Defense Dept......
