Brookfield, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 30,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Brookfield was founded in 1837 by Nicholas K. Butler and James W. Brophy as a small farming community on the north side of what is now Midtown Chicago. The town had limited development until it became an industrial center during World War II with its production of munitions and other products for the war effort. After the war, Brookfield regained its growth as an agricultural center; today it remains one of the most populous towns in Cook County and one of Illinois' most diverse communities with populations from all over North America and Europe. The town's namesake, Nicholas K. Butler (1806-1881), was born in Boston, Massachusetts to Irish parents who immigrated there in 1807. He worked his way up through local mills and factories before becoming president of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company in 1872. In 1877 he bought land near present-day Midtown Chicago to build what would become Brookfield Township (later village). That same year he won a competition to design a new town square that would be located on land donated by John Lawler (1784-1854), founder of Lawler & Whitney Paper Merchants Association - which later became First National Bank - and Joshua Riddle (1785-1865). Butler's Square was dedication ceremonies for the new town took place on December 3, 1877; it has remained green ever since due to more than 1 million items destroyed or damaged during World War II storage operations at nearby Winnetka Arsenal

Brookfield, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois. The population was 61,595 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Illinois and one of the five most populous cities in Chicago metropolitan area. Brookfield is located on the western bank of the Fox River just upstream from downtown Chicago. It straddles both banks of the river and has a total area of 191 square miles (510 km2). The first permanent settlement in what is now Brookfield was made by traders from Holland in 1693. The town was named after John Brooks, Surveyor General for Canada under King George II and superintendent of Indian affairs for that country during the early part of his reign. In 1795, when Congress passed an act establishing a new national capital at Philadelphia, they decided to locate their new capital near what is now downtown Chicago; accordingly, they granted a large tract of land to John Mott inBrookfield Township on November 9th, 1795. This grant included sections that are now Downtown Chicago and parts of West Side Manhattan as well as some undeveloped territory today called Northwestern Indiana Park and Northwestern Michigan Parkway
In 1819, the first effort was made to establish a town in this area. A lot of people from Brookfield were interested in having a town, but no one went through with it. In 1835, the first post office was established in Brookfield. The population of Brookfield grew slowly until the late 1800s when it exploded due to waves of immigration and the development of railroads. By 1910, Brookfield had an estimated population of over 100,000 people.
