Brookfield is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. Brookfield was founded in 1837 by Samuel and Rebecca Brookfield. It became a city on December 1, 1907. The first town meeting of what would become Brookfield was held on February 3, 1837. Samuel and Rebecca Brookfield were the organizers of the town. They met with other farmers to get ideas for improving their land and for creating a community where they could live together as one family. The first buildings were built around this time including a schoolhouse, storehouses, and barns. Over time, more businesses cropped up and the population grew steadily until it reached 456 in 1860 when it peaked at 612. By 1870, there were already over 20 churches in town and the population had grown to 1,821 people. The growth of the telegraph industry led to an increase in business hours which caused more residents to move from downtownBrookfield into new subdivisions that formed today’s neighborhoods such as Elmwood Park (northwest), Mayfair (southwest), Ridgway (southwest), Butler Heights (east), Brighton Beach ( northeast) and Kenilworth (northeast). Brookfield is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 93,542 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Brookfield has been home to many industries over the years such as textiles, automobiles and steel production. The city's roots go back to 1795 when a group of English farmers founded a small community on the east side of town by naming it "Newbury". In 1854, Newbury was merged into Brookfield and renamed after its founder, Timothy Brookfield. Brookfield first became a municipality in 1892 and annexed parts of West Side Highway (now State Street) and Bridgeport in 1896. The population grew rapidly during World War I due to military production facilities located in the city; these included an armament plant run by Krupp that produced shells for American troops fighting in Europe. After the war ended, most production shifted from Brookfield to other cities within Cook County due to postwar economic depression. However, some businesses continued operations inBrookfield until about 1960; these include Jardine Paper Products Inc., which operated a paper mill until 1984; Koppers Drug Mart (now Kroger), which opened its first store here in 1906; Stonington Manufacturing Co., which manufactured radios and televisions until 1977; Ballston Spa Mills Inc., which made bath towels until 1979; and Sycamore Elecricity Corp., which produced electricity before being bought by Edison National Labs in 1948. The post-World War II boom period saw rapid growth for both housing prices and jobs throughout the city center while much of rural Cook County experienced stagnation or decline. Thisensonocity contributed to increased traffic congestion on streets near downtown as well as suburban sprawl outside of town limits along Interstate 95 southward into Indiana Territory where heavy industry flourished during this period also known as "The manufacturing belt." Brookfield was first settled in 1827 by John and Nancy Brook. The town was named after the brook that ran through it. In 1830, the village of Brookfield was organized. The first post office opened in 1830 and the first store closed in 1835. By 1840, there were twelve businesses in Brookfield. The population of Brookfield grew steadily until the early 1800s when it peaked at around 1,500 people. It declined rapidly thereafter and reached its low point during the Great Depression when only 100 people lived inBrookfield. In 1955, Brookfield separated from Elkhart County to form its own government. In 2000, a new elementary school was built on Main Street in Brooksville and renamed after former Mayor Harry Daugherty Jr..
