The Brookfield Army Depot was once a significant center of munitions production in the Midwest. It is now home to the Illinois National Guard's 1st Battalion, 173rd Airborne Regiment, and its predecessors (the 3rd Infantry Regiment, the 2nd Infantry Regiment). The battalion has been activated more than once since World War II, most notably in Kosovo and Iraq. In Brookfield's history there have been many different gifts sent to the military from civilians. Brookfield is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 23,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Brookfield was founded by General John Fitch and his family on November 12, 1833. The name "Brookfield" originated from the brooks that ran through the town. The first settlers in Brookfield were Captain James Wilkinson and his wife Eliza Wilkinson who arrived on October 15, 1834. They had six children: James (1835-1907), Nancy (1837-1925), John (1839-1920), Louisa (1841-1931), and Alfred (1843-1968). Captain Wilkinson's family soon became well known in the community for their hospitality and generosity; they often hosted important people such as Presidents Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S Grant during their visits to Illinois or when visiting their home state of Virginia. In 1838, General George Armstrong Custer visited Brookfield while on his way to Fort Ford near Peoria where he would lead an army against Mexican forces under Santa Anna. While staying at Captain Wilkinson's house, Custer came into contact with Eliza Wilkinson and felliskered with her husband until she got angry enough to send him away without having any further dealings with him. This event is sometimes cited as the beginning of romantic relationships between men and women in Brookfield; however, it actually happened a few weeks earlier when Captain Wilkinson met Captain David Dixon Clarke while accompanying General Custer on his trip around Springfield Township; Clarke later married Eliza Wilkinson after this incident. The first school in BrookFIELD opened its doors on August 29th 1836 which was led by Reverend Ebenezer Kemble along with Mrs Browning who taught reading and writing to children from 3rd grade up until high school graduation In 1840 Rev Kemble also started a girls' school which educated young ladies for marriage before World War I began In 1842 Mr Browning moved out of town so Mrs Kemble took over running both schools together As more families moved into town it grew difficult for one woman to manage two schools simultaneously so she closed one school in 1861 And finally Girls High School closed its doors On September 1st 1870 . . . In 1873 Rev Kemble transferred ownership of Girls High School from Mrs Kemble to Miss Kelley who operated it until 1971 When it reopened as Brooks Valley Community Academy With much fanfare On January 1st 1978 It merged with Loyola University Chicago To become one big university called Loyola Chicago University

The town was renamed to Brookfield in 1859 after Onondaga Creek. In 1892, Brookfield became a city and was one of the original seven towns in Cook County.
