Bradley is a small town in the county of Kane, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,266 at the 2000 census. Bradley is named for Captain John Bradley who fought in the Mexican-American War and was aide to General Ulysses S. Grant. The first settlement in what is now Bradley was made by fur traders on the banks of the Kaskaskia River in 1827. In 1829, a Post Office and store were established here; this became known as "Bradley's Store" until it burned down in 1881. A sawmill and grist mill were built here in 1865; these also burned down in 1865 and 1967, respectively. The first school was built here in 1876; this became known as "Bradley Elementary School" until it closed during World War II due to wartime shortages of teachers. A telephone line from Chicago linked Bradley with Jacksonville, Illinois on November 5, 1906 (purchased by Jumbo Telephone Company). On January 14, 1907 (purchase by Jumbo Telephone Company), an electric streetcar line opened between Jacksonville and Bradley which ran northbound on Third Street and southbound on Wellston Avenue through town center before terminating at an alley near Main Street east of the high school building. This streetcar line operated until its cessation on October 28, 1951 (the last day of service). In 1912, a post office called "New Market" was established at the intersection of Third Street and Wellston Avenue; this post office continued to serve as such until it closed on December 12, 1916 (the last day of service). On May 8, 1919 (purchase by Northwestern Electric Railway), a railroad trackage rights connection from Jacksonville to Bradley was completed which allowed trains running between Jacksonville and Chicago to stop at both stations without having to switch locomotives or cars outside town limits! On July 16th following this connection opening revenue began coming into town for the first time since incorporation!
