Bensenville, Illinois is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers in Bensenville arrived in 1836 and established a small community on the east side of Kankakee River. They named their community after Benjamin Franklin Bensen, an American politician who served as President of the United States from 1790 to 1793. In 1839, they moved to what is now Kankakee Township and built a log cabin which still stands today. They were soon joined by other pioneers who began farming land in what is now Kankakee Township and neighboring Will County. In 1871, George Washington Carver arrived in Bensenville and opened a grocery store which became one of the most successful businesses in town. He also donated land for a Carnegie Library which was completed in 1913. The townspeople continued to prosper through World War II when they produced much agricultural produce such as cornmeal and flour for local markets. After the war ended, however, economic conditions changed and many businesses closed including Carver's grocery store. Today, Bensenville retains its historic character with many buildings remaining standing from when it was first settled including the original log cabin where Benjamin Franklin Bensen lived and founded his business back when Kankakee Township only consisted of 200 acres (80 hectares). The town has seen some recent growth with new development coming along Kankakee Road which bisects its eastern edge making it easier to get around Town Square where cultural events are held monthly like jazz concerts or Art Walk Fridays during summer months when there are plenty of people to walk around without having to worry about getting lost should things get too noisy inside Peoples Bank Building on Main Street across from Park District Stadium/High School).
