The National Guard in Addison, Illinois was first organized on December 15, 1815. It originally consisted of 140 militiamen from the town of Addison and its surrounding areas. The first National Guard unit was Company K of the 7th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry. The unit served until 1818 when it was disbanded because of lack of funding. On February 3, 1861, the 1st Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry was organized at Addison and served until September 1861 when it was mustered out because of the American Civil War. In 1865, a new regiment, Companies G and H were created from militia members from Addison that had served in the Union army during the war. These companies would serve for three years before being disbanded on October 20, 1870. After World War II ended in 1945, there was a large influx of refugees into Addison due to the Korean War and Vietnam Wars. This led to an increase in demand for National Guard units as well as increased funding for their programs. In 1978, a new regiment called Company Iwas formed from reservists from Addison who had been called up to active duty due to budget constraints caused by Reaganomics policies that were implemented at that time.

The National Guard was founded on July 16, 1792 as a volunteer Militia in the state of New York. It is believed that the first National Guard unit to be called into service was Company K of the 2nd Regiment from Schenectady, New York. The unit was mobilized for two weeks in response to an attack on Fort George by British forces in October 1792. The unit served until March 1793 when it returned home. In 1814, Pennsylvania began recruiting national guard units and by 1815 there were three regiments under command of the Pennsylvania militia General John Armstrong. On December 12th, 1815 Armstrong's regiment successfully repelled a British attack at White Sands on Long Island which demonstrated the effectiveness of a well-drilled and well-led militia force. On January 1st, 1816 the 3rd Regiment was organized from parts of Companies G and H of the 1st Brigade (now the 8th Infantry Brigade)at Middlebury County courthouse and consolidated with other units around this time including Companies D (now company E), F (now company G), I (now company J), N (now company O) and P (now company Q). In 1840 federal troops were sent to invade West Virginia to suppress Native American resistance to white settlement; this led to increased recruitment activity among state militias as citizens joined or re-joined their military comrades against Federal troops. In 1861 several thousand men volunteered for duty in Kentucky during the American Civil War; many more took up arms thereafter throughout America due to various causes such as social unrest or fear of expansionism by Great Britain or France. After Abraham Lincoln's victory over slavery in November 1865, many soldiers who had fought for slavery turned over their weapons and joined Union armies against Reconstructionist efforts within states such as Mississippi where black enrollment had reached 50% by 1870; someunit commanders chose to remain loyal to Confederate States even after Union victory. Many more men voluntarily enlisted through local forces across America during Reconstruction following Union withdrawal from most major wars throughout history
