French traders had been trading along this route for years before that when they encountered local Native Americans during their exploration around 1680-1685 led by Jean Nicolet who named these regions "New France." In 1795 large numbers Catholic refugees from Europe landed at Joliette Point on Lake Michigan while seeking refuge from religious persecution under General Pontiac's American Rebellion; many men, women and children went overland direct to Joliette where they camped out before being transported by boats downriver to Galena Island where they disembarked on December 12th with their baggage ashore near what is now Campobello Street - this was only one temporary stop along their long journey across North America as many other groups did likewise including those known as "The Hollanders" who arrived July 14th – August 1st 1700 at Ft Michilimackinac (modern day Red Wing) off Mackinac Island Ferry Landing - this group may have also included some Dutch East Indiamen which had started upriver from Amsterdam Mayflower Bay soon afterwards!
