It is the county seat of Cook County and home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The incorporated town of Addison was founded in 1833 by John Addison and other pioneers who came from Massachusetts. The name "Addison" comes from Mount Athos in Greece. The first settler in Addison was John Addison himself, who arrived on October 12, 1833 from Littleton, Vermont with his family and two horses. He platted what is now downtown Addison on land that he donated to the government for a public square. On May 10, 1836, President James Kapp announced that out of necessity due to growth within the township boundaries (the original townships were not coterminous with today's neighborhoods), all new settlers were required to move into one or more designated blocks set aside for them on both sides of Elm Street east of Harrison Avenue. As a result of this ordinance (and others like it passed throughoutnorthwestern Illinois during the 1830s), many families quickly moved into what are now central and eastern downtown Addison – including those who owned lots along Harrison Avenue – making it one of the most rapidly growing cities west of Chicago by 1840. In 1852–1853 an act was passed by Congress which allocated $10 000 for public improvements within each Congressional District; this money was used to build roads and bridges connecting various parts of northwest Illinois as well as construct buildings such as State Capitol building in Springfield (then called Washington). This attention to local needs helped give birth to one of Northwest Illinois' most vibrant commercial districts: Oneida Street ran through downtown Addison from Harrison Ave.– Adams Rd.– Douglas Blvd.– Rush St.– Belknap Rd., serving coffeehouses and groceries until it crossed State Road 2 just north of Wilson Park Cemetery after which it served mainly apartments until automobiles became common there in the early 1960s when streetcars restored much earlier than they would have otherwise been possible resumed service on Oneida between Rush St.-Belknap Rd./Wilson Park Cemetery

The first post office was established in 1841 and by 1865 Addison had a population of 1,200. In 1876, Addison became the first town in Cook County to annex adjacent villages of Sheffield and Park Ridge. The annexation created what is now known as Addison Township. Addison's history can be traced back to 1838 when it was organized as a village under the name "Lake View". On July 4th that year, settlers from New York arrived at Lake View with their families for the summer season and soon began building homes on what would become Addison Township. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in Addison Village. In 1865, following annexation of adjoining villages of Sheffield and Park Ridge (now known as Addison Township), Addisontown increased its size by adding two additional wards: North End (the easternmost ward) and South End (the southernmost ward). With this growth came an increase in taxes which funded public infrastructure such as schools, churches, roads and hospitals – all while maintaining a low rate of population growth Ratepayers remained largely self-governing until after World War II when township status became mandatory under state law. From then on addisons citizens have been obligated to attend township meetings even if they do not reside within their municipality's borders; however many continue to wield considerable influence over local government through service on boards or committees related to their community home turf. Today Addision remains quickly growing with incorporation proposals being submitted for every decade since 2000 with little sign of abatement; real estate prices continue stratospheric highs making it difficult for most residents to maintain affordable housing without selling out or moving away altogether; yet despite these challenges numerous individuals continue strive daily towards trying improve life quality for everyone here including striving hard during times where progress seems impossible
