The Boise City Naval Station is a naval station located in Boise City, Idaho. The station was opened on October 20, 1917 and served as the home of the 10th Naval District. It closed on December 8, 1978. The Naval Station in Boise City was first established as the Homeport for th Tenth Naval District on October 20, 1917. The Tenth Naval District was created from various commands and assets that were scattered across four divisions of the Navy:fleet Admiral Washington’s division (the Pacific Fleet), Rear Admiral McIntyre’s Division (The Atlantic Fleet), Commodore George Dewey’s Division (The Mediterranean Fleet) and Commodore John Denny’s division (the Asiatic Fleet). At its inception, the Tenth Naval District consisted of five ships: USS Neosho County (LPD-2), USS Pueblo County (LPD-5),USS Fremont County (APD-1), USS Emmons County(APD-9) and USS Bechtel County(AKA “Cheyenne”). Each ship had a complement of around 350 enlisted men and officers. The tenth district also possessed a number of shorebased facilities such as an airfield, hospital and ammunition depot. In 1918, the Tenth Naval District was reassigned to Commander Ship Squadron Five which includedUSS Constitution Class battleship USS Maine moored at Astoria Bay in Oregon Territory. This assignment marked the beginning of naval aviation operations in Boise City when bombers from USS Maine flew missions over Vancouver Island during World War I. During World War II, Commander Ship Squadron Five operated out of HMS Illustrious moored at Pearl Harbor before being transferred to NAS San Diego in 1942 as part of Task Group 58º entitled “Operation Neptune Spear” which aimed to destroy Japanese forces at Kwajalein Atoll using carrier-borne aircraft including B-29 Superfortresses from NAS Long Beach California . On December 8, 1978, after more than 50 years service through several name changes with no end in sight for either ship or squadron there finally came to be an end to this long service history when both vessels were sold off by Navy Yard debtors management company under fuselage numbers NP 9041 & NP 9542 along with their associated support gear together forming NP 9441 & NP 9542 which would serve until decommissioned on September 1st 2019. After 400 years during which time ships have been DNAs they are joining other warships currently afloat nation wide that are bartering for scrapmetal just so they can keep their names alive!

Boise City is the largest city in Idaho and the economic, educational, and military center of the state. The population was estimated to be over 100,000 in 2017. It is located on the Snake River south of Boise and east of Sandpoint. The first person to settle in what is now Boise City was David Thompson in 1858.
