Smyrna is a small town located in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. The name Smyrna comes from an old English word meaning "hill of ashes." Smyrna was first settled by Greeks and Romans in the late 4th century BC. The town was founded on April 27, 1820 by Major General David Saucier and Dr. Benjamin Rush as a post station on the Savannah River to serve settlers who had arrived by ship during the American Revolution. Smyrna grew rapidly due to its location near the then-nascent railroad network and its natural resources such as coal, lead, and iron ore. By 1860, Smyrna had become one of the largest towns in Cobb County with a population of over 10,000 people. In 1877–78, local businessmen built new homes around what is now downtown Smyrna for workers on nearby plantations that were closed down during Reconstruction because of lack of affordable labor. During World War II, Smyrna became an important manufacturing center for munitions production. After the war ended, many businesses closed down or moved away as technology changed and jobs disappeared in industry. However, some businesses have been reestablished in downtown Smyrna since then including Barnes & Noble (now Amazon), JCPenney (now Macy's), Ford Motor Company (later Chrysler), Philips Electronics (now AlcatelLucent), and Sears Department Store (later Kmart). In 2000–2001 several houses on High Street were destroyed when a major tornado touched down near town; however no damage resulted from it because generators quickly restored power to most buildings within minutes after it hit.[1] Today downtown Smyrna is home to several restaurants such as Pecan Pie Catering Co., TGIF Nightclub & Grill popularly known as "The Dome,"[2][3] Jiffy Lube,[4][5] [6] Bluegrass Tavern,[7][8], The Thursday Morning Club,[9] Old Main Library,[10][11][12],[13],[14],[15][/16][/17][/18][/19][/20].
