Pooler is a small town in southwest Georgia, United States. The population was 1,844 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke County, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The original name for Pooler was "Powder Springs". In 1876, a post office was established at Pooler and the name was changed to its current spelling, Pooler, in honor of Rufus Pooler who donated land to the town. The first store in Pooler opened in 1882. In 1907, a schoolhouse and church were built. A new store opened in 1912 and named it Storey's Grocery & bakery. A fire destroyed all but one building on Main Street in 1932; however, the community rebuilt with donations from many individuals and businesses including Storey's son-in-law Sam Hargrave who reopened the store as Hargrave's General Store until it closed in 1984. Pooler, Georgia is located in the U.S. state of Georgia and is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. As of the 2000 census, its population was 149 people. The community was founded in 1892 by James Pooler and his wife, Anna Gibbs, as a small farming village on a low bluff overlooking Pooler Creek. It became an agricultural center after being selected as the site for a new cotton gin in 1899 by J.P. Morgan & Company agent John Galton. The townsite grew rapidly after incorporation as a city in 1907 under Mayor William Pritchard with backing from Coca-Cola founder Fenton Robinson and other business leaders. In 1950 it became the first city to be incorporated within the then-new Metropolitan Atlanta Area (MAAA). The town name may derive from an early settler's nickname for one another - "Poolers" for men and "Gibbses" for women - due to their common adherence to Baptist religion. Although there are no records to support this claim, some residents may have adopted that moniker because they were familiar with each other's physiologies or habits through physical contact only
