Perry is a town in the U.S. state of Georgia, located on the Chattahoochee River. The population was 5,722 at the 2000 census. Perry is part of the Athens-Clarke County metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1811 by pioneers from what is now Alabama as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River between that state and Georgia. The name "Perry" means "headwaters." It was first called Allatoona after an Algonquian word meaning "place where two rivers meet." In 1821, Perry became the site of one of several key battles during Andrew Jackson's first term as president, when General Robert Ewing captured it from Creek Indian Chief Cochran while he was retreating southward following a victory over Native Americans at Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. In 1840, Perry again came under attack by Indians, this time led by Confederate Lieutenant Colonel John Maney, who burned most of the town and killed many people before being defeated by Union forces under General George McClellan at First Bull Run Bridge near present-day Arlington Heights in Virginia. A new community was developed around what is now Perry Hall School District No. 4 (now part of Athens-Clarke County). The United States Congress passed an act designating September 23 as National Recognition Day for those who fought for America in its Revolutionary War and Mexican–American War campaigns; Perry received such notice on that date in 1851. Edwin Drake became America's first territorial governor when he arrived there on October 15, 1851; he chose to recognize Perry's status as a small cotton outpost rather thanSubmit to Mexico City's demands for federal recognition as a territory with its own government and legislature. By 1860, only about 10 percent of Georgians lived within 25 miles (40 kilometers) of Atlanta; but with growing railroad construction throughout much of Georgia during this period and newly discovered oil reserves soon to be developed along the Chattahoochee River valley, industry rapidly expanded and built up central Georgia into one vast city—Atlanta—by 1880. As late as 1910 less than 5 percent (1 out every 11)of Georgians lived within 25 miles (40 kilometers)of Atlanta proper; but with growth back into rural areas throughout much of metro Atlanta since World War II has reversed this trend: today more than 60 percent (almost all residents)of metro Atlantans live within 25 miles (40 kilometers)of their home county or city center
