The Peachtree City, Georgia National Guard was organized on March 15, 1861. The first unit to be raised in Peachtree City was the 2nd Regiment of Georgia Infantry. On July 4th, 1861, the first state convention for the organization of a national guard was held in Atlanta and it voted to raise a regiment of cavalry. On November 12th, 1861, the 1st Regiment of Cavalry was organized in Peachtree City and it served until 1865. The National Guard also raised two companies of infantry in 1892 and 1902.
Peachtree City is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 25,914 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. Peachtree City is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first residents of what is now Peachtree City were farmers and their animals who founded what would become one of the country's largest cotton plantations in 1807. In 1825, Peachtree City was chartered as a town by an act of Congress. From its incorporation until after World War II it was known as "Canton" because it lay within the boundaries of Cobb County which then formed the southern border of Atlanta. In 1948, Peachtree City became an incorporated city when all but two neighborhoods within its limits voted to become cities instead of being annexed into Cobb County without a vote by their respective councils or citizens assemblies (the exception being Decatur which did not ratify incorporation). As an incorporated city, Peachtree City enjoyed certain benefits such as a police force and fire department and access to public schools and services that were available only to municipality-level cities such as Cobb or Gwinnett counties with populations over 100,000 people. With growth in suburban development aroundAtlanta during the late 1960s and early 1970s, however, much power gradually passed from city hall to suburban mayors who used this power to increase taxes on residents while reducing services offered to them by city hall (e.g., reducing funding for libraries). This aggressive annexation policy eventually led to heated conflict between Canton residents over increased taxes versus service reductions; various lawsuits were filed alleging defamation against Canton mayor John Armstrong for publicly criticizingcity hall policies; street riots occurred in 1978 and 1980 when outdoor fires broke out among demonstrators protesting increasing taxes;[1] most recently there has been anti-growth activism driven by students at nearby Druid Hills High School attemptingto restriction housing development adjacent to their school district boundary − ultimately resulting in developers building new homes on unincorporated land east of Druid Hills High School that fronts onto Canton property lines
