The Coast Guard gift history in Lagrange, Georgia stretches back to 1916. The first gift was a mop and bucket set, which was given to the Coast Guard by Mrs. Ladd Graham of Glynn County. In 1925, the Coast Guard received its first radio receiver. That same year, the Coast Guard received its own constructed vessel- the CG-7 Starfish. Vessels were also donated from time to time such as the CG-1 Vega in 1957 and 1960. In 1976, the Coast Guard received its new command center which is still in use today. That same year also saw the donation of a Piper PA28 Arrow helicopter from Helicopter Co., Incorporated. From 1977 until 1982, gifts were made annually for customs personnel who served on U.S. soil at various ports of entry along with law enforcement officers stationed at those facilities during that time period (i.e., Border Patrol). That same decade also saw contributions from private individuals such as Don Peele who gave a boat and trailerette along with other equipment to help with operations at Savannah Beach Pier; Hans Zimmerbach who donated an American Whitetail deer rifle; Bob Beecham who contributed a 1958 Cadillacs they had purchased used in Macon; and Tom Murphy who gave five motorcycles valued at $2,500 each to be used by the Coast Guard Auxiliary in support of their duties ashore frequented by boaters/surfing enthusiasts throughout Georgia’s coastlines! In 1990, given that it has been 50 years since The Coast Guard began providing aid and assistance through donations of goods and services at various ports of entry across our state – it is appropriate that this seminal event occur on National Gift Day! On November 5th marks half a century since we have offered these goods and services free of charge to citizens residing within our borders! displays depicting gifts bestowed upon members or employees over this period are currently located inside both Headquarters - situated adjacent to where Mrs. Ladd Graham once sat - as well as in front of Government House located just off Main Street in downtown Lagrange proper!
