The unit was disbanded in 1804 due to budget cuts. After the American Revolution, Griffin became part of the Georgia Confederation of Volunteer Infantry Districts. In 1821, this district became the 1st brigade under General Andrew Jackson’s command and fought at Pea Ridge and First Bull Run. In 1861, Griffin became a state of Georgia and its 1st brigade under Colonel James Fenton Butler served in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. After Savannah was captured by Union forces, Butler's brigade continued to serve as an garrison until 1865 when it joined other brigades from Georgia in joining Sherman's army at Atlanta. After the war ended, many soldiers returned home and Griffin experienced rapid growth as an industrial town. However, there were also some concerns about how best to use these reserves which had already been called up for service during times of peace or emergencies such as World War II or Hurricane Katrina. In 1992, local businessman Jimmie Cox founded The National Guard Museum which located on State Route 522 in Griffin near downtown.
