Griffin, Georgia is a small town located in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 1,890 at the 2000 census. Griffin has been inhabited by Georgians since 1780 and is the second oldest continuously inhabited community in the state. It became a town on December 15, 1881, when it was incorporated as a village. The first settler in Griffin was James Alexander Pope who arrived in 1780 from Scotland. In 1801 he married Mary Graham of Augusta and they foundedPope's Mill which still stands today. Griffin also saw early development with the construction of the first schoolhouse in 1800 and another for students in 1802. In 1805 an act of Congress designated Griffin as the seat of government for Fulton County and it remained so until 1865 when Atlanta took over that role. In 1860 GrifFIN electric light company was organized to provide lighting for streets and buildings in downtown Griffin. The company failed but later resumed operations under new ownership with larger premises on Railroad Avenue near present-day First Baptist Church where it continues to operate to this day In 1886–87 John Aiken built what is now known as Aiken County Courthouse which served as home to many notable people including Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest and Congressman Tom Butler during Reconstruction period
