Gainesville, Georgia is a city located in the U.S. state of Georgia. The population was 35,755 at the 2010 census and was projected to grow to 50,871 by 2020. Gainesville is one of the largest cities in metro Atlanta and has been called "the Gateway City" due to its location on I-285 (I-75) and its accessibility to other metropolitan areas. The first people who settled in what is now Gainesville were Native Americans. In 1778, General James Oglethorpe founded what is now downtown Gainesville after moving his headquarters from Savannah, Georgia. In 1802, Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest established a military post here with 4 cannons and 8 soldiers that served until 1808 when it was abandoned because of a lack of food supplies and troops. The town was then moved up the creek which led to its current site in 1837 when a new courthouse & jail were built on Depot Street between Second Street and Third Street. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell traveled through this area on his way northward during the Atlanta Campaign before engaging northern forces at Peachtree Road near here on July 22nd for what became known as Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. After losing this battle, Ewell retreated southward along I-85 towards Chattanooga where he unsuccessfully attacked Union forces under George Biddle on October 14th before withdrawing back into Alabama two days later (October 15th). This event helped set the stage for the infamous “Bloody Sunday” massacre three weeks later when Confederate cavalry units killed more than 200 Union men northeast of metro Atlanta during an attack against Federal troops camped at Resaca Junction near here (March 15th). Following World War II, Gainesville experienced rapid growth as students came for college education or work during the post-war boom period known as "The Gilded Age". In 1957, Mayor John Sitton designated downtown Gainesville as an open-air shopping district complete with department stores such as Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney & Co., Kress Brothers Department Store and Macy's Incorporated; this allowed developers more flexibility in building projects without hindering access to businesses within walking distance of each other or preventing adjoining streets from being developed commercially or residential units from being permitted close to commercial properties. In 1959–1962 construction began on Peachtree Plaza which would become home to many large office buildings including MARTA's predecessor system Amtrak Southern Railway Company's main depot/terminal complex (now Gwinnett County Government Center), United Parcel Service's main distribution center and numerous small businesses including Anheuser Busch Brewery (later Budweiser), Coca Cola Refreshments / Minute Maid Tea Room/CocaCola Bottling Plant et al.; all resulting in significant economic development across downtown Gainesville throughout the 1960s through 1970s while also creating some traffic congestion around intersections such as First Avenue NE & PHEASANT RD./Gainesville Civic Center intersection which resulted from increased vehicle numbers using I-285 interchangerather than nearby exits like Sandy Springs Rd./Lamar Road when entering/exitging Downtown Gainesville from Interstate 75]. However since IDOT reconstructed I-285 eastbound between Stadium Drive & Woodruff Boulevard in 2003 it has become much smoother traffic flow with less exit/entry ramp congestion although there are stillOccasionallyOccurringTrafficJumpsAtIntersectionOnFirstAvenueNE&PHEASANTRD./Gainville Civic Center junction

The city was named for General Andrew Johnson because he helped build the original physical plant of the Atlanta, GA railway company.
