Cedartown is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Cedartown is located on the confluence of the Chattahoochee and Flint Rivers. The first settler in what became Cedartown was James Covington in 1819. He named his land for Captain David Caldwell of the British Royal Navy who had helped to defeat American forces at Battle of Mobile Bay in 1804. The community grew slowly until it reached its current size by 1920 when it had a population of just over 1,000 people. In 1916, General John J. Pershing awarded General Douglas MacArthur an estate near Cedartown for his undistinguished military service during World War I. MacArthur's widow soon donated all or most of this land to develop as a town called Cedarview which later became known as Cedartown after her husband's death in 1951. During World War II, many residents chose to stay behind after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and entered into the war on September 2, 1941 without warning America or requesting entry into the war under President Franklin D Roosevelt's Executive Order 9102 which exempted Japanese Americans from military service unless they were engaged in activities such as sabotage or espionage

Cedartown is a small town located in south Georgia, about 85 miles southeast of Atlanta. The community was founded in 1872 by General James Fayette Hill, who named it for the Cedars of Lebanon, which he saw while on a military campaign in that year. The first town hall was built in 1873 and the first store opened in 1875. In 1907, Cedartown became one of the towns annexed toAtlanta. Cedartown is home to two churches - First Baptist Church (founded in 1892) and Second Baptist Church (founded in 1902). A local grocery store and post office are also among its notable businesses. As a result of its diverse history and many landmarks, Cedartown has been featured as an episode of both "The Simpsons" and "South Park". Today, Cedartown is a quiet community with a population of around 950 residents. It retains much of its pioneer-era culture including traditional music, arts and crafts, danceshall performances and farm markets.
Cedartown was founded in 1795 by Captain James Robertson and his family. The town was named for the Cedars of Lebanon, which were located nearby. Robertson's original home, now known as the Robertson House Museum, is still standing. In 1814, the United States War Department requisitioned Cedartown to house troops deployed in the Mexican-American War. The town grew rapidly during this time and by 1847 it had a population of over 1000 people. In 1888, Cedartown became an incorporated municipality and its first mayor was J.C. Latham. During World War II, local businesses donated materials and equipment to the military effort including bombers and submarines that operated out of Naval Station Savannah. In 1951, Cedartown incorporated as a city with its own police department. It remained an unincorporated community until 1978 when it became part of Atlanta proper following enactment of cityhood laws statewide within Georgia legislature then signed into law by Governor Marvin Griffin Jr.. Today, Cedartown remains a small community with a population under 1,000 people but is quickly growing again due to resurgent economic development around its downtown core and newly opened retail corridors such as The Watermelon Patch restaurant & distillery on Bellhaven Ave., which has become one of Atlantas most popular tourist destinations
