It is part of the Wynwood–Miami Beach–Fort Lauderdale Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name means "a place where the winds come down," and it was given to Zephyrhills by Dr. John A. Ashe who developed the area during his time as a pioneering physician in Southern Florida. Zephyrhills grew quickly due to its location on US-1 between Miami and Fort Lauderdale; its close proximity to both major airports; and its many businesses that offered tax breaks or special deals for residents. Today, much of what made Zephyrhills so attractive has been replaced by development: modern shopping malls with high-end stores like Macy's, Sears and JCPenney; office parks with hundreds of jobs available; and homes for wealthy Floridians who appreciate excellent schools, safe streets and easy access to nature. However, there are still some areas that remain unchanged such as the preserved old citrus trees in North Park which produce oranges every year; students from nearby Plantation High School can walk to school; and several hand-held radios still operate in restored pioneer barns throughout town. Zephyrhills is known for its annual Yacht Races which take place around Lake Worth on April 15th each year (the date according to one source). The races are now also conducted on different course around Broward County including Sunrise Boulevard near Hollywood Hills (now part of South Bay Village), Pompano Beach Boulevard near Boca Raton Resort & Spa, Belleair Key Road near Jupiter Island (now a golf resort) - all within minutes' drive of ZEPHYRHILLS! There have even been race courses built outside of town – one located just north of downtown Melbourne Fields while another is being planned for west Palm Beach specifically for motorsports fans!

Zephyrhills was founded by John H. Fenton in 1892 as a small community on the banks of the St. Johns River. The community grew rapidly, and by 1914 it had reached its peak population of 1,500 residents. However, during World War I Zephyrhills was hit hard by the warring factions in Florida: the pro-war Democrats and the anti-war Republicans. In 1917 Fenton decided to move his community south to make way for military training facilities being built nearby. Unfortunately, this change in location also destroyed much of the original architecture and character of Zephyrhills. The town slowly resumed its growth after World War II, but again experienced some turbulence during the 1960s and 1970s due to disagreements over voting procedures and zoning changes that favored suburban development over traditional farming communities. Today, Zephyrhills is a well-known tourist destination with an active economy based largely upon agriculture and tourism.
