Zephyrhills, Florida is a town located in Citrus County, Florida. The population was 1,953 at the 2000 census. The name of the town comes from two rivers that merge near its borders- the Zephyr and Hills. The townsite was first platted in 1892 by J.B. Hinkle and his brother George Hinkle. It was named for Mount Zephyr which dominates the horizon to the east and west of town. One account suggests that John Caryl who built Fort Jefferson on Tampa Bay may have been inspired by seeing Mount Zephyr while visiting Zephyrhills during his military service in India in 1814-15 as part of a US expedition under General Harrison's command. Zephyrhills experienced some growth after World War II when it became an air force base used by the USAAF during World War II, Korea and Vietnam before it closed its doors following the war. It has since seen a decline with only 2 businesses remaining open within its confines since 2000 according to most recent Census data with only 1 store still open today which services mostly construction materials such as asphalt and electricians etc...What once were thriving small towns are now struggling against dwindling resources, competition from larger jurisdictions nearby, and fading memories of their heyday as an aviation center during World War II

The first post office in the town was established in 1869. In 1880, the name of the town was changed to Zephyrhills after a storm which caused extensive damage to nearbyIrma Plantation. In 1912, Zephyrhills became an incorporated city and began to experience rapid growth due to its location on a major train line and its ample production of citrus fruit. By 1940, Zephyrhills had over 60 businesses and over 1,000 residents. Over time, many new suburbs have been developed around the city limits including Sunrise Hills, Deerfield Beach and Falcon Heights.
