Walton Beach–Butler Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Winter Springs comes from the winter conditions that prevailed in the area during the 1800s and early 1900s. In 1892, a person named Willis Waterman thought the name sounded like "Wintry Springs." That year, he made an application to change the name of his town to Winter Springs after visiting several other towns with similar names in Georgia and North Carolina. On December 3, 1893, Winter Springs became a city with a population of 100 people under its jurisdiction. In 1915, when Escambia County was created from parts of Calhoun and Santa Rosa counties, Winter Springs was annexed into Escambia County as well. However, it reverted back to its original name on January 1st of 1916 when Escambia County changed its form from county to municipality again without giving any notice to Winter Springs residents or their representatives. After World War II ended andEscambia County became an all-county municipality once again on January 1st of 1949 (the same date as Springdale),WinterSpring reverted back to its original name on October 7th 1951 despite persistent efforts by some residents and civic organizations to keep it unchanged (). The community was founded in 1892 by General James Eads and his family as a station on the Stonington Railroad. Winter Springs became a town in 1903, and it incorporated as a village in 1925. In 1960, Winter Springs became an unincorporated census-designated place (CDP). The first permanent settler in Winter Springs was J.E.B. Stuart who arrived around 1892 from Kentucky with his family to open up new land for farming near present-day Jacksonville Landing on the Stonington Railroad. After only one year of settlement, Stuart's son John Auld moved into what is now known as Springdale with his wife and two children: Anna and Willie Auld. Anna began teaching school there in 1893 while Willie worked on their father's farm until he married Emmeline McCann about 1896 or 1897; they had six children together: Donald McCann (1898-1976), Nora McCann (1901-1981), John Fenton McCann (1903-1982), Kathleen McCann Burke (1905-1992), Alice Llewellyn McCann (1908-1998)and Aloysius McMahon McCabe (18 November 1889 - 15 March 1976).
