Winter Springs is located in Polk County, Florida, about 25 miles east of Tallahassee and 50 miles south of Jacksonville. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. It is a small town that revolves around its two hospitals- Saint John's Regional Medical Center and Gulf Coast Hospital- as well as its churches and schools. Winter Springs has a humid subtropical climate (Cfa) with warm to hot days and cool nights, average monthly precipitation of 126 inches, and an average temperature of 63 degrees F (18 degrees C). The first Europeans to visit what is now Winter Springs were Spanish missionaries in 1692. They named the area Santa Ana de la Vega after the Virgin Mary. In 1837, General James K. Polk sent contingents to purchase land in Polk County from the Seminole Indians. The residents voted on December 4, 1837 to incorporation as a town under the name Winter Springs. The original plat for Winter Springs was filed on January 11, 1840 by Wm Hays Chilton with lots numbered 1 through 12 in Block 10 East of Main Street. On February 8th, 1840 Charles Goode donated Lot 14 which he had been purchasing from William Spear since 1836 for $100/year plus tithes payable annually until it was sold to Daniel Tyler on October 3rd 1850; thus starting the town's history with both donation fees and building permits! In 1850 Lieutenant Colonel George Aiken Wingate arrived in winter quarters at Fort Brooke near Pensacola before his Expedition against Mexico City during the Mexican–American War; he had been ordered by President Fillmore to send troops into winter quarters at Winter Springs because Mobile Bay could not be closed without army support due to ice accumulation there since December 29th 1800! LtCol Wingate called upon Brevardians who were then living in Springdale along with many white families who had evacuated their homes during Hurricane Andrew when it made landfall on August 20th 1992 just north of here! The Wingates built a beautiful log house known as "the White House" today's Stonington Elementary School across from Gulf Coast Hospital; it served asWingate's headquarters while he prepared his Campaign Against Mexico City! After much discussion among residents over issues such as fire hydrants, public square names etc., voters decided unanimously on November 9th 1960 that they would like their community founded upon "Lake Apopka", which later became more commonly known simply as Winter Springs after nearby Lake Apopka filled up following heavy rains caused by hurricanes Andrew & Hanna due to inadequate agricultural drainage systems within our tiny community! After careful consideration over several months voters ratified this decision becoming one hundred percent vested with full voting rights finally giving us our municipal charter dated November 9th 1960 which we affectionately refer to every day since then!"

Winter Springs was founded in 1884 by George H. White and his wife, Sarah. The city was named for the winter season, since it was then that Palm Beach County accepted annexation from Duval County. In 1928, white entrepreneur Fenton Clayton donated over two million dollars to build a new library in town. That same year, Winter Springs voters approved annexation of neighboring Davie into the city limits funds were raised to purchase land east of the Redondo Bridge and development began on what is now known as State Road 527. In 1933, Mayor John Meeks established the City Council which would later serve as the governing body for Winter Springs through annexations of other municipalities including Plantation andBroward counties in 1945 and 1966 respectively. In 1957, Mayor Gerald Jaffe appointed Drury Herschel as Parks Commissioner which created much controversy since Herschel had no experience with park management or planning. However, Herschel quickly proved himself a capable leader by creating many of Winter Springs' most esteemed amenities such as its world-famous Herschel Park Golf Course and bringing about significant redevelopment of downtown streetscape including installation of streetlights and resurfacing of sidewalks throughout the city center during his tenure. Today, Winter Springs remains one of Florida's most vibrant communities with a population over 100,000 residents who enjoy outdoor activities such as skiing, snowmobiling and fishing on Broward Lake; shopping at local boutiques; dining at world-renowned restaurants like Scarpetta’s Italian restaurant or The Ritz-Carlton; playing golf at nearby Ponte Vedra Beach Resort or Stonington Country Club; attending local events such as Woman’s Day Celebration or Floridian Jazz Festival; or taking advantage of its wide range of cultural attractions like Museum Of Fine Arts (MFA) art exhibitions or The Florida Aquarium (AFAS).
