The air force stationed at Eglin Air Force Base played an important role in this growth. In 1941, the air force began making donations of Christmas gifts to local families. This tradition has continued uninterrupted to present day. Today,Winter Springs is home to over 20 military installations and 300 civilian employees who provide services to these troops and their families. Winter Springs was founded in 1892 as a small community north of Sanford on the Seminole Trail. The Air Force deployed gift history in 1954, when it first deployed a gift unit. The unit was reactivated in 1955 as the USAF Aide to the President Unit. It served as an aide to U.S. Presidents from Dwight D. Eisenhower to George H.W. Bush and has now been activated annually since 2009.
Winter Springs was founded in 1882 by J.B. Payne and his brother, W.D. Payne. The town grew rapidly due to its location near the then-new Winter Springs Railroad Station and its proximity to the Gulf of Mexico. In 1916, the United States Postal Service moved Winter Springs from Jacksonville, Florida to its current location within what is now Polk County. The post office was renamed Frostburg in honor of Dr. John A. Frost who served as Postmaster at Winter Springs from 1922 until his death in 1961
Winter Springs was founded by the Winter Springs Improvement Association on December 5, 1887. The association was formed to promote development in the area and improve conditions for residents. The original town site was located on a parcel of land that is now known as Springdale. In 1906, the town name was changed to WinterSprings, in honor of President James K. Polk who died in office that year. The name change came about because at the time it sounded more like a spring than a word meaning “spring”.
