In December of 1944, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 which called for the establishment of the National Guard in every state. The order created a militia to protect the United States from domestic and foreign threats and also served as a reserve force for the military. The first units were raised in Florida under this order. The National Guard was originally organized into battalions (smaller units) with Companies A through E and G through I. These companies were disbanded in 1947 when new organization laws changed battalion into regiment and regiment into brigade. In 1951, brigades were established as divisions within regiments and then divisions became brigades. Each brigade had two infantry battalions each, one artillery battalion, one tank battalion, one armored cavalry battalion, one air defense battalion and one support unit (such as an engineer company). On July 1st, 1957 the Air Defense Artillery Brigade was designated an Air Defense Command brigade and its artillery designation was changed to artillery division on October 1st. On September 15th 1960, Brigadier General Clarence Fenton activated Florida's 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team at Fort Myers Beach so that it could be properly trained for deployment to South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. Winter Garden, Florida is a small town located in Naples County, Florida on the Gulf of Mexico. The population was 1,600 at the 2000 census. Winter Garden has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years. The area that now makes up Winter Garden was first populated by two groups of Creek Indians who traded with Spanish colonists in the 16th century. In 1825, Winter Garden became part of what was then known as Indianola County and it was during this time that many of the early citrus crops were grown here. The first proper winter home built in Winter Garden was erected in 1827 by Captain John Fenton and his family. It stood on land that is now bounded by Old Fort Myers Boulevard to the north, US-1 to the east, and Gulf Drive to the south. This house served as both a family home and summer rental until 1872 when it burned down after being damaged by a fire set by local boys playing outside. In 1860, John Troup purchased 1/4 mile (1 kilometer) of beachfront from Captain Fenton for $5 per acre (0.24 hectare). He named his property "Winter Garden" in honor of his new acquisition. Today's SpringHill Beach Boulevard marks Troup's original land purchase which he divided into three parcels: one parcel lay inland near US-1; another parcel extended along Bayou Road to Jupiter Lake; while the last parcel lay offshore between Autumn Point Road and Spring Hill Lane. A post office called "Winter Gardens" was established at this site on November 12, 1860, five days after Troup's arrival in Winter Garden. The postmaster reported receiving nine letters from residents within two weeks of its opening! During much of its history before World War I there were no streetlights or sidewalks in Winter Garden so citizens had to walk their dogs at night or use torches when needed! In 1915 Mayor Jepsen ordered all lights put back on in order reduce electricity consumption during wartime! After the war ended however revenues generated from sales tax increased so a new courthouse and jail were constructed which allowed for even more streetlights! After Hurricane Wilma hit Naples on October 29, 2005 parts of Fall River Township including Winter Garden were flooded due to high winds speeds reaching up to 115 mph (185 km/h)! Over 850 people lost power because heavy rains caused trees limbs 30 feet off ground snapped like twigs creating tornados throughout much of central Florida!. On December 3rd Governor Charlie Crist declared a state OF WARNING meaning dangerous weather conditions existed across much Central Florida including portions of Fall River Township!! Christmas tree Lighting took place inside City Hall where about 1700 people turned out for an eventful day outdoors!!! Many businesses closed early due To hazardous wind chill values leading some parents having trouble getting children dressed warmly enough!!!
Winter Garden was founded in 1847 by General John C. Brevard and his wife,Maria L. Brevard. The town became an important center for citrus production during the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1916, Winter Garden was renamed after President Woodrow Wilson.
