Wildwood is a small town in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Wildwood was originally inhabited by Seminole and Creek Native Americans. The first Europeans to visit the area were the Spanish in 1565, who named it San Pedro de los Floridos after a ship they had seen off the coast of Florida. In 1795, Fort Myers was established as a trading post on what is now State Road 526 west of modern Wildwood. In 1821, wildflowers were first grown here for use in perfume production. A post office was founded here in 1825; but it closed within one year due to lack of mail service from central Florida. A store and saloon called The Gables opened in 1830 on Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard west of present-day Main Street; it became defunct several years later when consolidation among its constituent towns led to the creation of Kissimmee into an independent city in 1838. In 1865, John Crouch patented his idea for creating a water filtration plant using natural means such as reverse osmosis and ultraviolet light therapy which he named Aquarius After his patent No 810507 B2 US Patent 378909 filed 4 Sep 1865 by Joice Crouch & Sons Ltd., all rights reserved under US Patents Nos 601109 (1868), 619606 (1872), 727451 (1875). This new technology allowed Orange juice to be made available for sale for the first time ever outside California or New York City! Wildwood became incorporated as a village on 7 Jun 1907 from portions of unincorporated Lee County eastward including present-day Wildwood Village and parts of Kissimmee Village . On 30 Apr 1909, annexation by Orlando increased its population from 1,564 residents to 2,047 residents making it an official town with full powers to levy taxes and make ordinances subject only to those granted by Orlando . The name "Wildwood" originated with Captain Edwin Drake who explored this area during 1799-1800 while commandant general at St Augustine’s Barracks on Pensacola Bayou near present day Miami Beach USS Constitution stopped there on her maiden voyage on 12 Jul 1800 en route back home from Havana Cuba having reached Jacksonville Fla 3 days before
Wildwood, Florida was founded in 1837 by Major General James Wilkinson and his wife. The Wilkinson family were the first white settlers in what is now Wildwood. They started a small farm on the banks of the St Johns River. They also built a log cabin and began trading with other tribes in what is now Hillsborough County. In 1838, they organized a town government and named it after their home village of Wildwood near Bath, England. In 1850, they built a better cabin and started marketing their products to other local communities. The Wilkinson family continued to grow their farm and business until they died in 1907.
