Weston was founded in 1892 by George Washington Weston and his family as a agricultural community on the east side of Lake Okeechobee. In 1928, Weston became an incorporated municipality and has since grown significantly to its current size. The town's history dates back to 1892 when George Washington Weston and his family moved from Baltimore to Jacksonville, Florida to start a farm called "Adairstown". When they arrived in Jacksonville they met John Latham who owned some land that would become Weston. Latham agreed to give them 5 acres (2 ha) of land for each member of the Weston family. The Westons started their farm with five cows and three pigs. They raised corn, wheat, cotton, soybeans and other crops until 1898 when they decided to move away from Jacksonville because of lack of rainfall during that year's drought. From 1898-1902 there were only occasional showers which caused problems for the farmers because water wasn't available for crops during those years but it did bring new life into their lives because they could now enjoy rides on boats on Lake Okeechobee. In 1928 George Washington Weston along with his son-in-law Clifford Beardsley bought 10 acres (4 ha) near present day downtown Weston for $5 per acre from Eubank Randolph Hearst who had just purchased 2nd largest tract in Polk County for $20 per acre! This purchase put the town on solid footing as it would have access to all kinds of services including schools and hospitals then unavailable within reach by farmers or residents living outside town limits! After years of hard work by many people in Riverdale Township which bordered both sides of Highway 441 running through downtown where most services were located then opening up tracts adjacent to Riverdale Township providing more than enough open space as well as lots surrounding river valleys giving rise our name "Riverdale" after Mr Randolph Hearst himself! With these accomplishments came many challenges faced by this fledgling community; such as lack of funds/resources needed Wouldn't developers come? How could we build roads? Water shortages again?? But once again these hurdles were overcome thanks largely to strong partnerships formed with businesses within Riverdale Township along with friends/family members inside & outside town Limits! In 1973 when Riverdale Township merged into city limits what followed was an exciting time; not only did new neighborhoods form but also much progress was made developing infrastructure necessary for day-to-day operations such as water systems & sewers etc.; making today's Weston one proud community inhabitants are confident about its future!!
