Weston, Florida is a small town in Tampa Bay, Florida. It is the second most populous city in Hillsborough County after Tampa and has a population of over 120,000 as of 2020. The first European settlement in Weston was by Captain John Thornton on July 25, 1778. In 1836, General Andrew Jackson's army invaded Hillsborough County and destroyed nearly all of the Indian settlements east of Tampa Bay. The Indians were force-marched south to what is now Clearwater Beach where they were interned until their departure for Mexico in 1838. On November 1, 1830, Andrew Johnson became president of the United States and ordered all military forces out of Florida. This caused a large influx of white settlers into the area and by 1835 almost all Germans had moved to Weston; German families also founded many businesses such as grocery stores and breweries. The first school was built in Weston in 1836 using funding from Jacksonville businessman James Averill Hilliard who donated land for the school on SW 4th Street near today's intersection with US-1 (now SR 231). In 1840, Major George Washington Lewis donated land for a public square at SW 2nd Street and NW 12th Avenue which still stands today as part of downtown Weston. After being closed for several years due to financial issues within the School District #2 (now Hillsborough County Schools) during the Great Famine Of 1893-1894, students reopened Weston's only high school on September 16th 1898 when it reopened under new management from Pemberton High School District No 8 located in Melbourne Heights which closed its doors that year due to lack of enrollment following World War I . Classes resumed January 15th 1919 after renovations were completed at Pemberton High SchoolDistrict No 8 which led to one hundred percent enrollment return four years later! In 1925 automobiles were made available for purchase by township residents through local dealerships known as "Motor Pool". By 1928 gasoline rationing had ended so vehicles could be enjoyed without penalty or loss! At this time speaker wires became available for purchase from local wire companies such as Wires Today Incorporated !!! By 1930 motor pools opened up along SW 4th Street between US-1/SR 231st Streetand Brentwood Boulevard becoming an important aspect of village life !!! Speedway Boulevard became "The Strip" with dances every night starting at 9pm until 3am during prohibition era !! In 1945 thousands came home from World War II following Victory Over Japan celebrations including actor Orson Welles who said: "I can't tell you how delighted I am here among my own people – it seems like everything I knew before just wasn't so important." One thousand men marched down Main Street carrying American flags while loudspeakers played patriotic songs ! two days later they took possessionof government land west side creek bridge !! From then until 1951 when it was taken over by commercial developmentthe creekbridge served primarily as a transportation link between Weston Village Center (west side)and Polk City across US-1/SR 231stStreet
