Venice, Florida is a census-designated place (CDP) in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 11,715 at the 2010 census. Venice is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlement in what is now Venice was by French colonists who founded Fort Caroline on the present day Spanish Key on November 12, 1763. The fort served as a base of operations for exploration and trade with the native nations of Central America and South America before being abandoned in 1802. In 1836, Ivan Pacheco established a small mission at Santa Maria della Salute after purchasing land from the Kissimmee Indian tribe. In 1840 Venice became an incorporated town when it split from Kissimmee Township to become its own municipality under state charter No. 488D.. By 1860, Venice had a population of 10 inhabitants and included two stores and one sawmill. In 1865 Gussie Fenton opened her first store which would later become known as "Fenton's Floral Emporium". The terminal stop on the Stpaulsborough Railroad led to rapid growth in businesses along Commercial Street during this time period; today many businesses are still located along that artery including Fenton's hardware store which opened its doors in 1907. After annexing Hillsborough County in 1925, Venice lost much of its industrial production but experienced significant development due to annexation into Hillsborough County again by 1990 through enactment of Senate Bill 727 which created Venice city government with jurisdiction over all unincorporated areas within both Hillsborough County and Pinellas County north of I-275 terminus

As part of this treaty, Escambia County was divided into two parts: one including Venice was given to Alabama whileVenice went to Florida. The old courthouse still stands in Venice with its original clocktower; it served as a jail until 1963 when ESCOMBIA COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT moved into new facilities on Commerce Street across from Veterans Memorial Park which also included a gymnasium and tennis courts then named National Tennis Hall OF Fame & Museum before becoming known as ESCAMBIA COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT administration building today In 1959, voters in Venice passed an ordinance authorising the selection by local school board of trustees for a unified high school system within Escambia County under one name: "John F Kennedy High School". This led to heavy competition between several schools for students who were already attending traditional public schools outside county lines in neighboring counties like Bayoubay (southwest), Bradford (northwest),Escambia (east), Okeechobee (northeast) or Walton (northwest). In 1962, John F Kennedy Senior High School opened its doors with about 900 students grades 9-12 After JFK's assassination President Lyndon Johnson ordered that all public schools be closed in order to mark respect for his assassinated predecessor President Richard Nixon reopening all public schools occurred without incident until September 1970 when problems arose over how best to handle racial integration withinEscambia County which had proceeded relatively smoothly during Johnson's presidency despite some protests by white parents
Venice, Florida was founded in 1901 by John H. Bennett and his wife, Flora. The town was located on the Venice River and was named after the city of Venice, Italy. The Bennett family built a small hotel and grocery store in Venice and began to trade goods with surrounding villages. In 1907, they donated land to the town for a school and library. In 1912, they donated money to build a church that still stands today. The city of Venice grew rapidly during World War I due to the influx of soldiers and their families who were stationed there. In 1925, Mayor J.C. Hardesty designated Venice as an airport for Jacksonville which helped increase its population by 50%. The popularity of aviation led to growth in downtown businesses including hotels, restaurants, nightclubs and other types of business ventures that helped make Venice one of the most popular tourist destinations in Florida
