Tarpon Springs is a small town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Escambia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1892 by John and Priscilla Haley as a fishing village on the Gulf of Mexico coast. Tarpon Springs grew rapidly with its large salt water lagoon and abundance of seafood until it became an agricultural center after World War II. The post-WWII growth stopped as more people moved to urban areas. The population has gradually declined since 2000 due to loss of jobs in the agricultural industry and other factors. In recent years, some development has been undertaken in the town including new housing developments, a golf course, a business park and high school. There are plans for further development which could result in another large reduction in the population over time. Despite this decline, Tarpon Springs remains an important stop on Interstate 10 for tourists visiting Escambia County and nearby Destin Beach/Monroe Beach because of its rich history and interesting architecture

As part of this operation, souvenirs were given out to all those who contributed items to the gift basket - including watermelons! In 1975, Admiral Rickover presented USS Enterprise (CVN-64) with a custom built aircraft hangar which became known as "TheRickover Hangar". This hangar was named in honor of Admiral Rickover's father who had served as Commandant of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar prior to his death in 1970. There have also been many forgettable or unimportant deployments such as 1993 when USS Pueblo (LPH-3) transported goods between Japan and Guam; 1995 when USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) sailed into Yokosuka Harbor; 1996 when USS Fitzgerald collided with another ship off California; 1998 when USS John F Kennedy (CV 62) delivered destroyers Wasp(DDG 57), Independence(IHV 112), Shiloh(HSV 38), Ramon Magsaysay Class FREMM frigate
