Small batch coffee history in Tampa, Florida begins with the first café opened in 1905 by George W. Smith and his partner, Fenton Jackson. The business was called the Coffee House and served coffee from a pot on the front porch. In 1925, ownership passed to Harry J. Pritchard and it became known as the Pritchard Cafeteria. In 1951, Gordon Biersch Brewing Company moved its manufacturing plant to Tampa and began marketing small batches of beer under the name of Bucs Brewery. In 1973, Publix Super Markets acquired Bucs Brewery and changed its name to Publix Coffee & Co., Inc., which remains today the parent company for all of Publix's coffee businesses including their Tampa store location (now known as One Petroleum Center). In 1984, Starbucks announced that they would open their first store in Tampa Bay area; however, this plan never came to fruition because Starbucks only ever opened one cafe in Seattle Checkerboard Square. The first commercial brewing operations took place at Locke Island Brewing Company in 1991 when brewmaster Rick Simons started brewing 12-ounce beers using local water resources. This led to growth for Locke Island Brewing Company as they began producing larger quantities of beer that were able to be sold throughout greater Tampa Bay area; however, due to economic conditions during those years Locke Island Brewery ceased production in 2002 after many years of operation. The earliest known microbrewery located in Tampa Bay was founded by two brothers named Chuck & Donnie Wessels who operated a brewhouse on Hillsborough Avenue near Stroudsburg Road back in 1988-1989. They were finally shut down after 3 years of operation due largely to high costs associated with new fermentation methods then being developed at that time- these days all breweries utilizing modern technology are typically less expensive but still require significant capital investments prior to commencement of production In early 2006, Hillsborough County commissioners unanimously approved an ordinance allowing homebrewers within county limits – including downtown Tampa – access to limited amounts of beer produced by other brewers for personal use only (limited distribution is currently allowed ONLY through participating retailers). At this time there was no established system for distributing these limited quantity beers so homebrewers had little choice but to purchase them directly from participating retailers or via online orders . They were followed by Native Americans such as the Ais - an Oto group - who arrived about 800 CE from Mexico City; they built small villages near what is now downtown Tampa before moving westward over land acquired from Spain in 1763 following their defeat at Battle Of San Fernando Creek against British forces under Lieutenant Colonel James Cook while exploring Australia's newly discovered continent via sea route through Cape Horn (now Point Isabel). In 1845 local developer John Hixon built what would become today's downtown core along Clearwater Beachfront Avenue facing South Hillsborough Bay where he planned to create a new town designed according to his own specifications rather than those laid out by officials from Jacksonville due south – which became known asJacksonville – or vice versa. As early as 1848 it was noted that developers had laid out streets perpendicular to Clearwater beachfront but no one had built anything close to what Hixon intended so construction continued east along Davison Street until about 1870 when plans changed again with plans for an elaborate twin street system parallel to Gulfstream Boulevard called International Drive which never came into being because oil production began offshore soon afterward led to dramatic changes in maritime traffic patterns which made it difficult for transportation projects ashore while also limiting development eastward beyond St Petersburg proper resulting in what became known Downtown Tampa today instead largely reflecting efforts by commercial interests within its boundaries since streetcar services failed badly northward just beyond First Avenue/Downtown Ave before reopening southbound on Third Avenue following World War II growth related developments bypassing former downtown areas entirely including Warehouse District/Midtown Center becoming North Central Square only latter developing rapidly concurrent with nearby Youngstown Square southeast across Stadium Rd et al
