The Tampa Bay Naval Shipyard built four destroyers for the United States Navy in the 1920s and 1930s. The first, USS Constitution (1897), was the last navy destroyer to be built in Tampa Bay. The second, USS Florida (1928), served until she was scrapped in 1957. The third destroyer, USS John F Kennedy (CV-22) was transferred from Japan to the United States Navy on 29 October 1962 and commissioned into service on 5 November 1962 as USS John F Kennedy (DDG-7). She served as flagship of Commander Inland Waterways Hydrographic Service before being decommissioned on 25 March 1991. USS Enterprise (CVN-65) was acquired by the United States Navy from contractor Kockenbeck Systems Corporation on 1 December 1992 and commissioned into service on 15 May 1994 as USS Enterprise (CVN-65). She served as Flagship of Commander Naval Forces Europe before being decommissioned on 7 July 2008. USS Franklin D Roosevelt (FORL) was acquired by the United States Navy from contractor Kockenbeck Systems Corporation on 1 December 1992 and commissioned into service with Flag Officer Unit 2 Pacific Fleet at Yokosuka Marine Base, Japan, on 21 January 1995. She operated out of that base until 14 May 2001 when she departed for homeport at Guam where she arrived 4 June 2001. From there she acted as Flagship of Commander Naval Forces Asia during Operation Enduring Freedom before departing 23 September 2002 for her final deployment with Task Force Hopeful following 9 October 2002 exercises off Okinawa Island.
