Tamarac is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,782 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the Seminole word "tamaraw" meaning "hillock." The first settlers of Tamarac were farmers and their families who arrived in 1836. A post office called Tamarac was established in 1839, and remained in operation until 1903. In 1907, the name of the town was changed to Fort Myers after then-Governor Manuel F. Duralde signed legislation making it part of Miami–Dade County. The fishing industry played an important role in the early development of Tamarac and its environs. Naval vessels stopped here for fresh fish during World War II and afterwards; they also used this area to dump garbage which caused environmental damage. In 1957, Fort Myers Corporation began developing land south of Interstate 95 that would become Everglades National Park. As part of that development process, dredging operations started which disturbed many of the natural resources used by indigenous people for subsistence purposes including turtle nesting areas and mangrove swamps where they hunted marsh rats (a Forster's rat). In 1978, a group of businessmen formed Coastal Parks Inc., which bought 49 acres (20 ha) on Capistrano Beach near what is now downtown Fort Myers for use as a nature preserve with public access only from April through October when there are no hurricanes or severe weather conditions; however private developers continue to subdivide this area for commercial purposes In November 2006 deadline set by Hurricane Ivan made purchases necessary to protect Preserve assets lessening potential liability from future storms; $140 million had been raised by fall 2006 By early 2007 all but two parcels had been purchased totaling . tamaracs means "hillsocks" in Seminole so I thought why not write about TAMARAC? originally there was just a few hundred people living here now over 10k people live here! its really growing up! Tamarac is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 2,670 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Hollywood, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name of the town comes from two Indian words: "tamarack" (meaning "pineapple") and "kassimmee" (meaning "lake"). The first settlers were farmers who arrived around 1835. They named their new land Tamarac after a man who had been killed by Seminole Indians in what is now north Miami-Dade County. In 1846, Major General James Wilkinson captured Tamarac during the Seminole War and brought it under military rule. Afterward, many people here emigrated to modern day America. In 1857, Captain John McCloskey built a ferry service between Tamarac and Kissimmee on Lake Waccamaw; this allowed goods and passengers to be transported between these two towns without having to go through Sanford or Hollywood. This service ended in 1883 when the railroad came through; however, some remnants of this ferry stillexist today as boat ramps on GPS routes 3rd Street S., US 301E & 4th Street N.. Tamarac saw some significant growth after World War II when defense industries began moving into the area; especially within miles of Interstate 4 Everglades Boulevard which madeTamarac an important stop for workers commuting to those factories.
