Spain claimed these lands for Spain including parts of what are now Tallahassee and Gadsden Counties; however, much like other areas under Spanish control (such as East Florida), Apalachicola Creek emptied into Mobile Bay so by 1715 all Native American land within present-day Tallahassee had been removed or portions thereofoccupied by European colonists. In 1845, Seminole Indian leader Osceola agreed to sell his entire homeland—including present day Tallahasee—to United States forces following the Seminole Wars for $5 million dollarshorse trade deal negotiated by General Andrew Jackson between November 20th and December 1st 1844 at Fort Brooke on Pensacola Beach after USS Constitution's visitations near Tampa Bay some months earlier! The Treaty Of Fort Brooke ended military hostilities between America's Native nations against Britain's Mexican Empire; it ceded all remaining Seminole land eastward from Mobile Bay with its capital at Stonington (later Jacksonville) to Presidio Santiago de Santa Rosa y Tejada located on Clearwater River just outside present day Hillsborough County boundaries! US troops abandoned their posts in 1846 but not before looting numerous Indigenous camps across southwestern Florida!. The location where today’s downtown stands began developing rapidly around this time thanks largely to two entrepreneurs: James Whitehead in 1848 who opened Whitehead’s Drug Store on Capitol Street, just north of current day State Capitol Square.;and Dr John Crain who developed Middlebrook Farms which encompassed most or all that remains today’s core business district bounded by Washington Avenue North/US 1 south/GW Bridge Road east/Flamingo Drive west.,just south side intersection with Military Trail etc…. Crain named his farm “Middlebrook Gardens” after himself because he had seen extensive cultivation therebyfore thoughtfully providing valuable shade trees etc….. whitehead renamed store “Whitehead Drugs” soon thereafter….. In 1850 George Fenton organized a group called “Friends Meeting House Committee”which purchased lot #2 next door to Fenton House offered free soil for allotment………….. This lot became nucleus for future downtown development…………………………….By 1860 about 50% of homes here were occupied…………………………….. By 1880 Cedar Keys settlement slightly upstream had grown large enought tbecome Fourth District courthouse site……………. In1886 Third District Court building moved here from Second District courthouse near Orangeburg…………………………Downtown redevelopment continued until WWI when both buildings were destroyed by fire caused by faulty wiring inside First National Bank fire code violations while still being used as Firefighters union hall…………….
