With World War I on the horizon, they decided to build an airfield so they could provide work for American servicemen stationed inEurope during the war.resulting in an influx of workers who added around 100 homes on Alameda Avenue near NW First Street before construction began on July 15th 1919; originally called Miramar Air Force Base but renamed Southwest Field on October 15th 1920 due to its proximity to Miramar Beach which had opened two months earlier! On December 2nd 1923 Commissioned Brigadier General George Silliman Custer USMC Commandant arrived at Southwest Field just prior to Christmas present from President Warren G Harding! South Miami, Florida is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census.
