The history of South Miami began with Spanish settlers who arrived in the area in the early 1800s. After some time, English colonists also moved into the area and founded a town called Compass Hill within present-day South Miami. In 1828, both English and Spanish residents of SouthMiami met at an event called “The Treaty of New Orleans” to resolve their differences. At this meeting, both groups agreed that they would work together for the common good and form a government which would represent all residents of the area. This successful government was eventually replaced by one led by American Indians in 1834 after it proved difficult for either side to govern effectively. American Indian leaders decided that new leadership should be chosen from among their own people so that they could better manage their resources and protect their interests while living alongside white settlers. This new government lasted until 1838 when it was finally dissolved due to friction between Americans and Native Americans over land ownership and other issues. In 1839, Spanish settlers also moved into what is now South Miami from Cuba and soon established themselves above ground in what is now downtown Miami Beach; however, they continued to call themselves “Los Reyes” (the kings). This name stuck around until 1862 when Cuban immigrants took up power in Havana after Spain's collapse; however, these Cuban immigrants did not adopt Spanish naming customs so their towns/cities remained under Spanish names such as Compass Hill or Havana Heights (although most locals refer to them simply as South Miami). In 1898 during World War I, American forces invaded Cuba; however, America failed to take control of Cuba so war ensued between America and Spain resulting in Puerto Rican separatists taking control over much of southern Florida including parts of West Palm Beach (southwest corner), Coral Gables (northwest corner), Boca Raton (northcentral corner) & Key Largo ( southeastern corner). These separatists declared themselves an independent republic known as Puerto Rico with its own president & legislature but were eventually subdued by military force & unification with America happened soon afterwards on July 1st 1901 following US victory over Spain in a war known popularly as The United States v Mexico referendum - this referendum determined whether or not America would become a country separate from Spain (& Cuba). SouthMiami has seen significant growth throughout its centuries-long history! In 2010 alone, the city had an estimated population size of 200K+ making it one of Florida's fastest growing cities since 2000 – largely due to its expanding economy which includes several large commercial institutions along Flagler Street (~$100Billion annual GDP) – anchored by two University campuses: The University Of SouthernFlorida& duPont Manual College – both ranked among Top 25 nationally amongst Private Universities according To UJA–Hagit Berman School Rankings released last year . By 1915 more than 100 vessels had docked at Biscayne Bay providing enough docking capacity for all manner of boats large and small including yachts, launches, ferries, submarines and racing ships – making it one of the busiest ports onthe Gulf Coast during this period When World War II began South Miami was an early target due to its strategic location within range of several possible targets including Tampa Bay Naval Base where bombers were based during daylight hours while warships anchored offshore provided cover against German fighters overhead On December 7th 1941 Japanese submarine Kaga torpedoed USS Panay (CVA-19) off shore near Everglades National Park resulting in loss Of lifeixty five innocent men women children And two officers over 322 crew members aboard Kaga . This made Pearl Harbor the first American Naval vessel sunk by enemy action since victory over Japan at Midway Island two years earlier This attack also marked the beginning phaseof America's involvement in World War II with military installations being established throughout Southwest Florida including Camp White Sands nearby Homestead Air Force Base across from Ft Myers naval air station soon followed During 1945 almost 2 million gallons(70 metric tons)of gasoline were spilled into Biscayne BayGulf Estuary when US Navy oiler SS United States Fishkill leaked while underway offshore Sunrise Key
