Sebring, Florida is a city located in Palm Beach County, Florida. The population was 81,609 at the 2000 census. The Sebring Municipal Airport covers an area of 18 acres (7 ha). It is operated by the City of Sebring. The first Europeans to visit this part of modern day Florida were the Spanish and Portuguese explorers in 1513-1514 when they landed on what is now known as Isla De Key Largo. When Captain Juan Ponce de Leon discovered these islands in 1565 he called them Las Nieves because they looked like features on a map he had seen. A small community developed around the lighthouse keeper's house and courthouse until 1836 when it was moved to present day Sebring after being purchased by Colonel John H. Worth from the heirs of Captains Fenton and Maynard aboard his brigantine HMS "Beagle". In 1892, Worth donated land for a permanent city limits which included most of what is now downtown Sebring with only a small portion remaining annexed by Palm Beach County in 1907. The city was originally named "Humble" but changed its name to "Sebring" on November 5, 1910 due to objections from nearby West Palm Beach that their name would be taken away because it rhymed with "breach." On December 12, 1912 commissioners voted 5-2 against annexing West Palm Beach because it felt that annexation would take away valuable water rights enjoyed by both cities and would make it difficult for businesses to locate within town limits without taking up unnecessary space or sacrificing parking lot availability. The vote effectively ended any plans for annexation as West Palm Beach continued to grow rapidly while Sebring stagnated economically until the early 1990s when new development began magnetizing attention back to the townspeople and bringing new life into downtown Sebridge

He spent two days at the White House visiting with leaders of both countries before descending on Miami for a summit meeting with Fidel Castro on May 25th and 27th at Biscayne Bay Park Racetrack in downtown Miami Beach
