Sebastian, Florida is a small town located in Hillsborough County. It was founded in 1836 by General James O'Hara and his family. The first post office was established here in 1838. In 1915, the United States Army moved to Sebastian from Fort Myers, Florida after World War I. The First Infantry Regiment of the Third Infantry Brigade Combat Team (III Corps) stationed here fought at Gettysburg and Chickamauga National Park as part of the Union army. After the end of World War II, the regiment disbanded and its members were discharged or transferred to other commands. However, some soldiers that served in Sebastian remain with the community through various organizations such as Veterans Affairs Memorial Museum and Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps unit number 5992 which is also home to the oldest military-themed amusement park in America called "The Army".

Sebastian was founded in 1892 as a small station on the railroad between Miami and Key Biscayne. It became a city on June 1, 1957. The first European to visit Sebastian was Portuguese explorer Diogo Cão in 1513 and his crew who anchored off the coast of what is now Sebastian Island when they sighted land lying to their eastward. In 1892, construction began on theKey Biscayne Railway which connected Miami with Key Biscayne down through Sebastian Valley and then along Deerfield Beach Road to Fort Myers. The tracks were completed in 1893 and service began that fall from keybiscayne to Sebastian Airport which had been built just north of present day downtown Sebastian. The airport served as an all-weather stop for steamboats running between Miami and Key West until it closed in 1942 due to bombing during World War II; however, some relics of its past can still be seen today at nearby Fort Myers Marina (now Dolphin Marina). On July 1, 1957, after over 60 years of growth as a bedroom community for South Dade County residents commuting into South Beach or DowntownMiami respectively, Mayor Manuel Diaz signed an ordinance creating "Sebastian" as a city within its boundaries subject only to City Council approval rather than state or federal regulations governing cities smaller than 25 square miles (80 km²). In addition to providing increased authority for City Hall governance over affairs such as zoning ordinances and budgeting etc., this move allowed for annexation by neighboring Doral Municipality resulting in more jobs being created within city boundaries - something that has continued unabated even now more than 50 years later! Today's mayor - Ricardo Ramos - oversees day-to-day operations while also working towards strategies & goals related variously including: beautification projects/restoration & stabilization of infrastructure; marketing/development opportunities within & beyondour borders; enhancement/updates/replacement of public services currently operated by City Employees thru our contracted providers(Parks Dept., Library Dept., Streets Dept.;Fire Dept.), Executive Branch employees thru various contract arrangements entered into thru current government agency management teams established thru negotiations done since early 2014; drainage improvement projects currently ongoing noticeable throughout much of downtown core near US1 freeway entrance/exit ramps; comprehensive redevelopment plans are already under way for numerous parcels located inside city limits adjacent both University Park neighborhood annexed by new municipality following2010 Census Lands redistribution process overseen by current Mayor Ramirez’s predecessor – Ramiro Hernandez
