The Marine Corps Deployment Gift History in Sanford, Florida begins with the donation of a rifle to the Marines in December 1942. Sanford, Florida is a city in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 25,594 at the 2010 census. Sanford is located on State Road 712 and ZIP code 33319. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach metropolitan area. The first people to inhabit what is now Sanford were Creek Indians who lived near Fort Brooke on Sugarloaf Key. In 1824 Seminole Chief Osceola negotiated a peace treaty with American forces which included the giveaway of sugarcane fields in present-day Sanford to US troops as part of the Treaty of Moultrie Creek. The town was platted in 1835 by Captain James Witherspoon and David Stuart under the name "New Market." The town was renamed for General John Fenton (1785-1856), commander of US forces during Seminole Indian War (1837-1842). In 1849, Averill Harriman acquired 1,000 acres (500 ha) of land east of today's downtown from Elisha Cook Goodloe for $5 per acre ($/ha). The Harrimans built a plantation called “Sanford Plantation” which became one of America’s largest cotton plantations and remains an important economic development in central Broward County today. On March 15, 1907 – just over one hundred years after President James K. Polk had signed legislation creatingbroward county – voters approved annexation by Fort Lauderdale into county government following a referendum campaign that began two weeks earlier. At that time it had a population of 12,501 residents living in 204 homes scattered around four square miles within modern-dayFort Lauderdale limits; all but 2 percent or soof that original population remained until 1959 when annexation led to even more growth and developments in present day Sanford including major new shopping center complexes along SR712 stretching nearly two miles southward from Interstate 95 between I-95 exit #16A & I-95 exit #174A; office towers towering above downtown; additional housing developments continuing northeastward down SR712 past State Road 7012 onto Sunrise Boulevard whereupon Sunrise Boulevard becomes State Road 602; world famous golf course - Pinehurst Resort - administratively still within current boundaries although technically incorporated into neighboring Pompano Beach since 1974 Irving Park Golf Club opened its doors adjacent to Pompano Beach Blvd., less than one mile southeast from Stroudsburg Elementary School thenceforth serving as home not only for Irvings but also for families Villa Margarita High School physically contiguous with Stroudsburg Elementary School has served ever since as well providing excellent educational opportunities for both students and staff
