The Safety Harbor Coffee Company was founded in 1934 by Harry J. Baca and his wife, Clara. The company grew rapidly, and soon had two stores in town - one on the corner of Adams Street and Foley Avenue, and the other at 226 SSE Boulevard. In 1942, Baca retired from the company, but his son-in-law, Arturo Lopez continued to run it until its sale to Peet's Coffee in 1984. In 1945, Harry J. Baca's grandson John Fenton joined the company as a sales representative; he would later become vice president (1949–1957). In 1957, Harry J. Baca's great grandson Michael Fenton took over as president (1967–1975). In 1975, Safety Harbor Coffee & Tea was acquired by Peet's Coffee; it remained a subsidiary of Peet's until 1984 when it became its own independent company. Today,Safety Harbor Coffee Company still operates three stores - one on Adams Street and Foley Avenue (now part of the Salvation Army), one at 226 SSE Boulevard (now closed), and one on Memorial Drive near US 1 (closed).
Safety Harbor is a city in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St. Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area. The City of Safety Harbor was created on January 1, 1903 from parts of Stonington and Pinellas Counties. In 1912 it annexed the adjacent community of Lake Worth. On December 30, 1916, Safety Harbor became a city under the name of Port Charlotte after annexing that community as well. On November 15, 1984, an EF5 tornado struck the city killing six people and injuring over 100 people including many firefighters and police officers who were working in tandem to battle the storm later that day. On October 14th-15th Hurricane Irma caused severe damage to downtown with winds up to 175 mph (280 km/h). A total of $2 million has been spent repairing infrastructure affected by Hurricane Irma since it hit Safety Harbor on September 5th. In 1841, the area that is now Safety Harbor was part of the Spanish colony of Florida. When Spain ceded Florida to the United States in 1898, Safety Harbor became part of Indian Territory. In 1906,Safety Harbor became a city and in 1912 it was named after Mayor George W. Harper who had fought for its incorporation as a city. The first mayor of Safety Harbor was Mrs. Anna Cawthon Goodwin-Langston. In 1922, Safety Harbor annexed neighbouring communities of Apollo Beach and Fort Myers Beach which made it a total municipality with a population of over 100,000 people by 1940. The post-World War II period saw rapid growth in the community as developers built subdivisions and businesses opened up in what had been an agricultural area primarily used for raising cattle and citrus crops. The town developed into one of Florida's most vibrant suburbs with shopping malls, hospitals, schools and other recreational amenities available to its citizens. By the late 1990s safety harbor had lost some key aspects of its identity - such as being an exclusively white enclave - but has seen continued growth since then as more Hispanics move into the area seeking inexpensive homes or simply peace and quiet while they make their mark on local culture.
The first town in the area was named Safety Harbor. It was founded by Captain George risley in 1827 and it served as a depot for goods moving between Tampa and St. Petersburg. By 1830,Safety Harbor had grown to include a post office, store, blacksmith shop and school. In 1838, the town was annexed by Tampa and renamed Tampa Bay. In 1851, Safety Harbor became a city and in 1907 it merged with St Petersburg to become Tampa-St Petersburg combined municipality. The name of the city changed again in 1959 to Port Charlotte after the opening of Florida State University there.
