Punta Gorda, Florida is a small town located on the eastern coast of Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 16,839 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Punta Gorda were Spanish sailors in 1521 when they charted a course for Cuba. In 1795 Englishman James Cook discovered and named it after Manuel Diaz de Balboa, who had discovered Puerto Rico in 1493. The town was founded by cattle ranchers in 1849 and became an important seaport during the 1930s with passenger service from Havana and other Cuban ports. In 1951 Punta Gorda was designated as the site of one of two United States naval airfields used for strategic bombing during World War II: "Okinawa" east of Naval Air Station Miramar (later Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickory) and "Pitcairn Island". Afterward, it saw little civilian use until 1987 when its military role ended with its closure as a Naval Air Station. Today, Punta Gorda is home to several businesses which support local government services such as law enforcement, firefighting, public works and social welfare programs; as well as numerous submarines coming into service each year for training exercises off nearby Naval Base/Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickory. As one of America's most isolated oceanfront communities - just over 1 mile wide at its widest point - Punta Gorda has seen some dramatic changes over the years since its inception in 1850: A new shopping center opened in 2016; hurricane Irma damage caused extensive destruction to homes and businesses in September 2017; revitalization began last year with the opening of three new restaurants which provides economic stability while restoration takes place; and much remains to be done including renovation/replacement of allumbing/pumpkins on Main Street The history that surrounds Punta Gorda begins with Manuel Diaz de Balboa who discovered Puerto Rico on October 6th 1493 while sailing under Captains Bartholomew Diaz and Christopher Columbus. On his return trip he sailed upriver so that he could explore what he had found before landing his expedition at Isla Mujeres on November 8th where they found TC&F tobacco fields dating back to 1514 along with 2 small towns called San Lorenzo (founded by Juan Rodriguez de la Riva)and Concepcion (founded by Pedro Menendez). From these discoveries Balboa realized that this landmass was not only connected to Cuba but also had resources worth exploring further! As time passed more people came looking for this landmass which included 3 Portugese ships sent out by Queen Elizabeth I seeking revenge against Spain’s victory over her fleets at Battle Of Lepanto on October 12th 1571 however no evidence exists that any Portuguese vessels ever stopped here! This left many questions about this location henceforth known as “Isla Mujeres” or “Island Of Mystery” While still waters away from Cuba proper this discovery set forward what would become America’s second largest sugar plantation after Hispaniola! Puerto Rican admiral José del Toro landed here en route from Hispaniola bound for Cuba early fall 1502 aboard his flagship Santa Catarina upon sighting an island bearing Spanish initials within sight off Fort Santiago Point near present day Anacostia River estuary east side of downtown Pensacola,, marking their passage around Cape St Vincent Island In 1521 another group led by Alonso López de Legazpi sailed past modern day PtGorda Bay towards current day Key Biscayne Peninsula & Gilchrist Keys claiming sovereignty over both islands but never arrived ashore because they ran out of food & water! The next year Hernando Cortés arrived downriver from Mexico City finally disembarking his troops &caravan at Cudjoe Key Sept 21st 1504 having journeyed through almost 1200 miles across open sea including Crossing Coquimbo Lagoon twice!) Upon landfall he ordered Father Diego De La Hoz y Sánchez Prieto erected a cross atop today's Fort Worth Cathedral south plaza opposite entrance) soon afterwards both men went into exile due to religious differences between Spain & Portugal Later Buenaventura visited mainland U$S., met Rivera there then returned northward arriving Aug 5th1505 after crossing Caguas Lake Andrés Félix Aguilera Gomez General Order No 4 dated Sep 25th1505 granted him TxTO title Marquisate Of Yucatán governor general pro tempore viceroyalty Andrés Bellido Dirrell captaincy general Doña Isabel Díaz mayores almirante anglicana Venerable Antonio Maceo Curiel prior commandant don Francisco Javier Lopez mayor capitán general magistrado Don Nicolás Ruiz lopez major capitán distrito bonaerens don Vicente Guerrero presidente municipal en tiempos de Felipe Gonzalez Governor José Antonio Enriquez nº 2 Visitof May 2515] These events marked beginning of Spanish colonial rule over present day Yucatan Peninsula followed soon thereafter by French colonials [see later events]. That same year Captain John Hawkins captured Tortuga beach northeast side city limits(now Mapleton Beach)ORIGINAL NAME OF ISLAND: PINTO GORDA BEACHES ) AND BRANCHED OUT TO PINTO GORDA POINT IN MAY 1938 With additional captures HE CHARGED WITH CAPTAIN JOHN HOLWICH ON MARQUISATE OF WEST MAVERICK ISLAND AS PART OF HIS CONQUEST OF THAT AREA INCLUDING ALL THE COAST LINE FROM EEZ TO SAUDI ARABIA THAT YEAR.] By way of introduction Louis Zamperini wrote concerning Pinto gordaa beaches:"These sandy beaches located close together alongthesouthern coastofFloridaarethemost beautifulIhaveeverseen." Punta Gorda, Florida is situated on the southern coast of Florida. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the state. The town was founded by Spanish colonists in 1795. The name “Punta Gorda” comes from a cape that forms the eastern edge of this town. The history of Punta Gorda goes back to 1795 when Spanish colonists founded the town on the tip of a peninsula named after Punta Gorda, an island in the Caribbean Sea. At first, the settlers used this name only for themselves and their small community on Punta Gorda Island. But soon enough, other Spaniards arrived in Punta Gorda and started using it as their local appellation for all of southeastern Florida. Over time, many different groups moved to Punta Gorda and its surrounding areas. In 1821, Englishman John Byers decided to settle down in this part of Florida and named his new town Stonington after his hometown of Tunbridge Wells, England. Byers became very successful at running this small community and he continued to do so until his death in 1842. Meanwhile, other Englishmen also began arriving in Punta Gorda over time and they gradually replaced Byers as its mainstay population-wise. In 1875, another Englishman named Alfred Crouch bought land adjacent to Stonington and began building a large plantation called Indian Harbour Plantation which eventually became one of America’s largest sugar plantations during the late 19th century. Eventually, many more English people came to live here than had originally intended due to both economic opportunities as well as increasing pressure from American forces occupying Cuba during World War II ( nicknamed “the war against nature”). In 1948–49, Hurricane Floyd made landfall near Miami Beach causing significant damage but no loss or fatalities among either locals or visitors living within hurricane zones such as Puntagorda County at that time- something which would not happen again until 2003 when Hurricane Wilma caused widespread damage throughout much of southeastFlorida including parts of central Gulf Coast towns like Pensacola Bayou) . After Irma passed through these areas early Saturday morning September 14th 2009 there were reports that structures were damaged or destroyed with claims up into Friday evening range however none have been verified by law enforcement authorities making it difficult if not impossible to know for sure just how extensive any damage was
Punta Gorda was founded by Spanish colonists in the 16th century. In 1835, it became a U.S. naval base, and during World War II it served as an airfield for Allied bombers. In the 1960s, Punta Gorda experienced a period of rapid growth as an amusement park and holiday resort.
