Punta Gorda, Florida is a small town located on the southeast coast of South Carolina. The population was 14,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg County, North Carolina metropolitan area and is home to both Punta Gorda Island and Punta Gorda National Seashore. The island is one of two in the US that are designated as a national seashore, along with Eagle Cap National Seashore in Maine. The first Europeans to visit Punta Gorda were Spanish sailors who called it "Isla de la Muerte" (Island of Death). The name may have been derived from a nearby cape where local fishermen found rocky pieces that looked like skulls. In 1838, Englishman John Thornton discovered an uninhabited island to the east of Puntagorda and named it Islet #1 after his friend Sir John Franklin's HMS Erebus charted that spot in 1839. In 1841, Arawak Indians living near modern-day Jacksonville discovered oil drilling rigs off Islet #2 which led to its later designation as "Punta Gorda" by US Marines under General James Kenedy during World War II. In 1846, Captain Augustus Cook mapped much of what is now South Carolina when he visited this area for purposes of mapping new land for British East India Company vessels trading with Asia. When he sailed past Islet #1 on his way back from his ill-fated Voyage around Cape Horn in 1776, he called it Bodden Island because he believed it was connected to mainland America via a Strait between Bodden Island and Charleston Harbor. In 1898, Hurricane Hugo devastated parts of southeastern SC including Punta Gorda and caused extensive damage to infrastructure including bridges and homes; however no loss or injury reported among residents or businesses within a radiusOf upTo 20 miles (32 km). Punta Gorda, Florida is an unincorporated community located in Pinellas County, Florida. It was founded by the Spanish in 1777 as Puerto de la Gorda, after a point on the Bay of St. Petersburg where they sighted a large group of blackheads (gritters). The name was changed to Punta Gorda in 1827 to avoid confusion with Ponce de Leon's Isla de la Gorda off the coast of Cuba. The first land grant for Punta Gorda was made to Captain Pedro Menendez on August 5, 1779. A post office called "Punta Gorda" was established in 1821, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. By 1840, there were only six houses and twenty-eight people living here. The Charleston and Pensacola Railroad arrived at Punta Gorda on November 12, 1846. Soon after that date, many local businesses started up around the railroad depot including saddlers' shops, grocery stores, cotton ginners', and lumber yards. The town quickly became known as "the most important railway center west of Tampa." In 1865-1866 a hurricane destroyed much of what had been built around the depot but not before manyResidents moved into new homes or rented out space near their old ones while they rebuilt. In 1870-71 another hurricane caused extensive damage but no loss of life; this event was also declared a national tragedy by President Ulysses S. Grant because it demonstrated just how dangerous hurricanes could be during this time period After several years of operations by two different companies variously named Gulf Railway Company and Tampa Railway Company things came to an end when both companies merged into one company called "Gulf Coast Railroad" which took over all former subsidiary lines on December 1st 1898 . This merger created a very competitive business environment which led to some layoffs but also helped spur development around the Depot which included new housing developments
