Port Orange, Florida is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 39,521 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Everglades Peninsula and is one of the most heavily populated municipalities in Miami-Dade County. The townsite of Port Orange was first developed as an agricultural community by early Spanish settlers in the 18th century. In 1887, the area became part of Miami Township; however, it reverted to its original name after amalgamation with Doral in 1990. The town's namesake, Captain John Triton (1789-1851), saw trade opportunities along both coasts during his lifetime and helped stimulate growth around what would become Port Orange. He founded Fort Triton on present day Jackson Road in 1827 as a trading post for goods entering and leaving the region through what is now Southwest Key Biscayne Boulevard. By 1830Captain Triton had erected houses and built a steamboat dock at present day Bayfront Park to serve as his summer home; he also began shipping timber from nearby Lake Okeechobee to port in this same year. Tensions between Spain and America over sovereignty led to another war declaration by Spain on October 25th, 1898 – two months before America declared war against Spain – which ended with American victory at Manila Bay on December 15th that year. As part of World War I efforts to protect American citizens living abroad (mainly those inside Mexico City), President Woodrow Wilson ordered all ports open for commerce including Fort Triton during World War I efforts not only because it would have been difficult for enemy submarines or other threats to sneak into U.S ports but also because Cuba was then under Mexican control and could be used as a go-between for arms smuggling from Russia into Mexico City destined for Central America. Finally on January 1st 1993 Hurricane Andrew struck Miami creating rafting bans across much of South Florida which limited access availability but did not impact Port Orange specifically Although damage done included several homes lost including one owned by mayor Reynaldo Lopez himself some residents decided notto rebuild fearing they might again experience displacement if development increased near them A referendum held September 6th 1995 resulted in approval of increasing sales taxes�an event known locally as "The Day The Streets Turn Red"�prompting redevelopment activities which have since ceased although some infrastructure remains extant such as bayfront park

In 1835, Walton purchased land to the west of Port Orange and laid out what is now known as downtown Port Orange. He also built the first courthouse in Florida and the first school in Florida. In 1839, Walton married Anna Maria Moore and the couple moved their business to what is now called Walton Plaza. By 1840, Port Orange had become one of the most important commercial centers in Florida.
