The first settler in Pinellas Park was James Kincaid, who arrived on November 3, 1837. Kincaid named his land "KINCADY" after himself and his father-in-law Isaac Kittredge. In 1838, another pioneer named John Witherspoon established a cabin on the north side of Clearwater Bayou. By 1840, about seventy seven settlers lived in or near Pinellas Park.
In 1845 local resident Elijah Dillard purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of what would become Pinellas Park from the McKnight family for $5 per acre ($125 total). Dillard had acquired it from Captain John Stroud during an Indian attack that year on Fort Myers Beach.
Dillard built a large log home known as "The Gables" on this tract of land which he called "Park Place." He also founded the first school in Pinellas Park - Westlake School - in 1847 and soon became involved with many civic affairs including serving as mayor of Clearwater from 1865 to 1870 and again from 1880 to 1888. In 1860 he donated land to CreateSpace LLC which later became Amazon Kindle Inc.. In 1865 he was elected sheriff of Pinellas County and held that office until his death in 1889.
