Pinellas Park is a city in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 26,521 at the 2010 census. It had been part of Tampa until it was annexed by Pinellas Park in 1963. Pinellas Park is bordered to the north by Clearwater and to the east by St Petersburg. The first settler in what would become Pinellas Park was David Walker on November 3, 1835. He named his land after his father-in-law, James Buchanan Polk, who served as President of the United States from 1849 to 1853. In 1863, when Tampa became a municipality and Pinellas Park was annexed into that municipality, Pinellas Park's incorporation date is listed as November 15th of that year. On July 1st 1969, following an act passed by the Florida Legislature which changed municipal boundaries within Hillsborough County,[1] Pinellas Park' annexation into Hillsborough County occurred retroactively effective July 1st of that year making it one of only two cities in Hillsborough County with such annexation status (the other being Plantation). In its early years there were few residents because only reserved hunting and fishing rights were granted to white people on both sides of the bayou which separated Tampa from piney woods dating back to pre- Spanish days[citation needed]. As development increased around what are now downtown streets and business districts started popping up along 7 Mile Bayou Boulevard between I-275/US 301/SR 337 (now US 192) and Gulfstream Boulevard near SRT 605 nine miles WNW of downtown[2], most people living outside town worked for or delivered goods & services within town limits either through professional drivers or personal mules furnished with carts pulled by horses drawn by men or women on foot or bicycles. With increasing transportation needs came more demand for housing – especially during World War II when military housing projects proliferated throughout much of Southeast Florida – so developers built homes all over town while still reserving hunting and fishing rights open to white people only[3]. Pinellas Park was first settled in 1835 by John and Martha Pinellas. The original house is still standing, and it is now a museum. The park was created in 1886 as a result of the merger of two separate parks, Clearwater Beach and Gulfport. In 1922, the name change to Pinellas County when county seats were moved from Fort Myers to Pinellas Park.
