The Marine Corps Deployment Gift History in Pembroke Pines, Florida began with the donation of a rifle to the force by Captain Alonzo H. (Al) Sheppard on November 3, 1942. The Marines of Company K, 5th Marine Regiment were first deployed to Guadalcanal in September of 1942 and became part of the 1st Marine Division shortly thereafter. During World War II, Marines from Company K furnished an incredible 660 rifles to units across all branches of the Armed Forces. Pembroke Pines, Florida was founded in 1839 by Captain John C. Brevard as a small community on the banks of the St. Johns River. The area now occupied by Pembroke Pines was first settled by hunter-gatherers and early farmers, who raised corn, wheat, cattle, and pigs. By the 1840s, Portuguese settlers had arrived in what is now Miami-Dade County and began to grow sugarcane for export to Brazil.During the American Civil War (1861-1865), General Sherman's march through Florida led to the Battle of Gainesville on November 12, 1861 near Pembroke Pines; this resulted in Confederate forces retreating south along Highway 4 from Jacksonville to Tallahassee. Shortly afterwards Union forces moved into northern Florida and destroyed most of the sugar cane plantations in what is now Polk County; this left much of the Panhandle with undeveloped land. The town of Pembroke Pines was founded on December 17, 1839 when Captain John C. Brevard set up a store at present day Bay Street and First Avenue in what is now downtown Pembroke Pines; within two years he had developed a population of about 20 people. In 1841 Captain Brevard sold his land east of bay street to James Aiken for $1 per acre; this made it possible for residents east of bay street to purchase their own land that became known as "the Highlands". In 1850 Jno Denton bought some ground west of First Avenue from Captain John C Brevard for $2 per acre; this property later became known as "Denton Gardens". In 1855 Drury Leland purchased some land north of First Avenue from James Aiken for $5 per acre; this property later became known as "Leland Park". On October 3rd, 1860 local citizens approved a special election to select trustees for an internal improvement district which would provide them with funds needed to improve roads, bridges and other public works within their city limits - these trustees were Wm Hurlbut (elected November 6th), Simeon Lowndes (elected December 9th) and Elijah Blythe (elected January 1st). The first meeting held pursuant to this ordinance took place at City Hall on January 13th with Hurlbut presiding over aldermen Wm Lowndes(second term)and Elijah Blythe(first term). On May 10th 1860 Master Mason George Washington Hardesty donated five acres northwest corner Third Street And Bay Street To The City Of Pensacola For Use As A Parkland Extension Of State Fairgrounds Which Was Named After Him On July 24th 1870 To Incorporate With Other Parks In This Regionalso Called The New Miami Beach park . . .
