Panama City, Florida is a city in Panhandle County, Florida, United States. The population was 731 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first permanent English settlers in what is now Panama City were James Cook and his crew who explored the Gulf of Mexico in 1778-79 on the HMS "Endeavour." They named their new find "Isla de la Isla" after one of England's two main islands, Eider and Shetland. When Spain discovered this island chain in 1692 they named it "Islas de Calarca". After Spanish America fell to France during the Napoleonic Wars, Spain resumed control over these islands and re-named them "Panama". In 1821 a group of British soldiers under General Andrew Jackson arrived at Acapulco Bay and established FortJackson as a military post against Spanish incursions into Florida. These British troops also built several other forts around present day Panama City. The city was founded by Captain John Stonington on December 12th 1825 as part of FortJacksonborough complex including twelve small huts used by American troops during the Seminole War which ended with Federal victory over Seminoles on April 14th, 1865. The first store was built on West Second Street near present day US 1st Avenue. Today most of downtown Panama City can be found within the boundaries of either FortJackson or nearby University Park Historic Districts which are listings on the National Register of Historic Places
