The original population estimate for "Isla de la Bahía" was upwards of 10,000 people but only 2-3 percent or so actually lived there due mostly to disease brought over by European explorers who were not well equipped for dealing with tropical environments. In 1821, Spain ceded the area to United States of America as part of their Treaty of Paris following its victory in the Mexican-American War. Balboa, who explored and mapped Central America during 1795-1796 while surveyor for Spain on behalf of King Carlos III. The fort was used by Americans during World War II as a naval base before being decommissioned in 1951 and sold to Panamanian nationalists who used it as a summer resort until 1985 when it became a tourist destination again under American ownership.
