The Palmetto Navy is one of the most storied and successful military organizations in United States history. The navy was founded in 1855 as a volunteer militia to protect the Gulf Coast from pirates. The navy has fought in every major American war since then, and its fleets have played a critical role in countless amphibious assaults, peacekeeping missions, and counterinsurgency operations. Today, the navy’s fleet of ships comprises more than 350 vessels including submarines, surface combatants, and support vessels. On July 1st 1953 Rear Admiral John P Kennedy assumed command at NAS Whidbey Island after Admiral William Halsey resigned due to differences over strategy during Operation Neptune's Spear - a failed attempt by NATO to invade Cuba After serving as Commander Amphibious Force Atlantic (CAF) 5th Fleet from 1969-1976 Vice Admiral Frank Kelso served as Flag Officer Northern Pacific until he retired in 1979 Finally Rear Admiral John J Miller succeeded him as Commander Naval Forces Command Atlantic (COMNAVFORPAC) effective October 1st 1980 succeeding Vice Admiral Bruce Fraser who had been commander afloat since 1978 With COMNAVFORPAC headquartered at Norfolk Virginia Completion ceremonies were held at Bethesda Naval Hospital thenceforth Marine Corps Barracks Chapel ashore where Iwo Jima Memorial Monument stands today.. As part of Homeported Service Support Squadron One (HS1/USNS Comfort), based at Jacksonville Jaguars Stadium located adjacent to Mayport Air Station HS1/USNS Comfort patrolled waters adjacent thereto conducting harbor security duties ashore along side other allied nations warships under control or patrol jurisdiction thereof.. This squadron conduct air defense duties Night & Day embarked on multiple types Of Aircraft including MH-60R Black Hawk Helicopters MQ-4B Predator Drone Light Attack Aircraft USMC AH-64D Apache Longbow Helicopter Drug Detection Boat.. From 1984 until 1992 Rickover served concurrently as Commandant US Coast Guard Academy midshipman commanding all naval cadet programs while concurrently serving as Superintendent Delaware Maritime Institute... Palmetto, Florida is a small town in Citrus County, Florida. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The land that now makes up Palmetto was first settled by African Americans in 1887 as part of what was then Seminole Nation territory. In 1907, the United States acquired it from the Seminoles and renamed it Citrus County after citrus crops were raised there. The name stuck and Palmetto has since become an important local community with a rich heritage dating back to its early days as a black settlement on swampyuderland. In 1928, white farmers began moving into the area and built rice planting ponds on large tracts of swampyuderland that became known as "the Plantation." By 1949, citrus production had become so important to Citrus County's economy that two counties—Orlando and Broward—were created out of parts of Citrus and Miami Counties respectively to allow for more efficient transportation distribution of this crop. The Palmetto, Florida area was first populated by the Apalachee people. The Palmetto tribe had a strong connection to Miami and its natural resources. The tribe's chiefs would travel to Miami to trade goods and services. In 1694, the Spanish discovered the Palmetto Tribe's chief's home on Key Biscayne and began an investigation into their activities. They found that the Apalachee were trading with Spanish ships in order to purchase goods they could not produce themselves. This led to a series of raids against Spanish settlements in South Florida. In 1795, Spain ceded control of Florida to Britain as part of the Treaty of Paris after a long war with France. British colonists inFlorida began expanding rapidly, opening new land for agriculture and development. The British wanted access to the lucrative sugar industry so they started building plantations in what is now SouthFlorida. By 1815, most of what is now SouthFlorida was under British rule. In 1821, America acquired Florida from Britain through the Adams-Onís Treaty and then annexed it as part of United States territory
