The Coast Guard Operating Base in Palmetto, Florida was established on October 1, 1928. The first cutter, USCGC Auxiliary (AGS-1), was commissioned on December 10th, 1928 and the present Coast Guard Cutter fleet is composed of thirteen vessels. The original Coast Guard Cutter squadron comprised six vessel(s). In 1951 two new squadrons were ordered which increased the number to twelve vessels by 1957. In 1969 a third squadron was added and the total to fifteen vessels as of 1978. This increase followed the result of a competition for bids to purchase five new surface combatants/crowd control helicopters pursuant to an Air National guard request for assistance with crowd problems at a summer tourist attraction in Jacksonville, Florida. The winning bidder, Northrop Grumman Corporation, became responsible for providing all fifteen boats with helicopter service beginning on July 1st, 1979. On December 7th 1973 the President of The United States signed Executive Order 13423 which authorized "the procurement of six replacement patrol craft--twenty-four feet long by ten feet wide or less--for use by the U.S. Coast Guard." These were designated CG-1190 through -1215 and were delivered from Yarrow Shipbuilding Company Ltd., Dry Dock No2 Falmouth UK between January and May 1974 under Maritime Administration contract MAA 9665-72L; hull numbers being: CG-1190 (later CG-1215), CG-1189 (later CG-1318), CGN 2295 (now USS Guardian) . These replacements replaced eight aging OCBs that had been retired since 1953 due to various reasons including age, obsolescence or budget cuts; however they also fulfilled an important congressional mandate that specific types of crafts be available when needed most in order provide deterrence against piracy and other threats along our coastline. Palmetto, Florida is a small town located in Duval County, Florida. The population was 2,821 at the 2000 census. The name comes from the Palmetto tree that grows near the town. The first few settlers in what is now Palmetto were Menard and Hargrave families who arrived in 1835. A post office called Palmetto was established in 1854, and remained in operation until 1915. In 1892, a group of men from Jacksonville founded a sugar plantation on what is now known as Plantation Key east of present-day Palm Beach County. This area became known as Plantation Key because of its proximity to both the Spanish key of Havana and English key of Stonington on South Brevard Island. The original owners of this land were John Pritchard (1809-1896), James Wainwright (1825-1901), Samuel Youngblood (1810-1872), and Nicholas Wade (1800-1860). In 1903, they sold their interest to Jno Larkin & Co., Ltd., which operated it until 1923 when it passed into the hands of Harry Harkins & Sons Incorporated. This property changed hands again numerous times before becoming part of Citrus Park between 1946 and 1959 when it was purchased by Dr. Arthur Ashe Sr.'s citrus empire which included two plantations: Citrus Park I with an acreage measuring 614 acres; and Citrus Park II with an acreage measuring 2,628 acres adjoining Palm Beach Gardens golf course across Clearwater Creek just east of Interstate 95/Upper Miami Road). The first crop grown on this property was oranges in 1922; followed by grapefruit six years later; then tangerines three years after that; then avocados five years later; finally pineapples twelve months after that! Citrus Park I yielded $4 million worth of fruit during its thirty year history while Citrus Park II yielded $40 million worth during its sixty year history! Today, approximately one third of all juice produced statewide comes from these two plantations!
The Palmetto Peninsula was part of the Spanish colony of Florida in the early 16th century. In 1763, the British captured Pensacola and renamed it Fort George after King George II of Great Britain. The fort served as a base for British operations against the French in what is now Louisiana during the Seven Years' War. After France won that war, Spain ceded Florida to France in 1795. The following year, Spain ceded all of its possessions along with Cuba to America in the Treaty of Paris. In 1821, American forces invaded Florida and completed their conquest by 1840. In 1836, Congress passed an act Organic Act ofFlorida creating Seminole Nation and granting them land east of Stonington Sound on which they built their own government. The Seminoles were expelled from Florida by American troops in 1862 and again by Confederate troops in 1865; they returned to live on their original lands beginning in 1868.
